Dale, you sound like a different person. :) I'm so happy for you that you are getting a handle on this thing, even though it comes as a result of tough work. Here's a blue ribbon for you.

Miss Daisy, CONGRATULATIONS to you for taking the steps towards overcoming your fear. Also,Thank you for sharing your experiences with your driving. It is so comforting to hear that many of us share the same experiences. AmishBeauty I totally can relate to what you have said and it makes me realize I'm not crazy after all. Sometimes I feel as if the whole world is crazy for trying to force me to drive on the highway. But like Miss Daisy said, it is major avoidance. Also, I do agree that it is very exhausting and time consuming thinking about the fear of getting on the road. Or trying to hide from my husband and family that to avoid the highway I took the extra, slow long route. It's actually pretty funny when I think about it now. One day at a time though. Sometimes I think, why me?? Oh well, there must be a reason, I'll have to be willing to find it. Miss Daisy, I'm going to look into that program but need to really be honest with my husband first about my fear, no more hiding. Don't give up everyone and thanks again! :)

Dear Group Members: Do you find yourself reacting somewhat fearfully to other challenges in your life as well? I know that, despite my great marks in university and good job performance reviews, having skipped a grade in school, I am always fighting back negativity and self-doubt. For me, the lack of confidence and self-esteem had just generalized to driving (since it was operating in several spheres anyway). Once I worked on improving my overall self-esteem and really learning to love myself, love life and the person I really am, I learned to let go of the negative recriminations. I am not saying there aren't driving situations that make me nervous (such as very young children playing and riding bikes, scooters, skating in my street round the clock all year long, making it hard to even get out of the driveway); however, fear is no longer my dominant emotional response. Also, cutting back on coffee and maintaining level blood sugar levels by eating balanced meals with protein, vegies and complex carbs along with B-Complex vitamin drink has helped immensely... say nothing of prayer. So, for me anyway, trying to get positive in my overall mental framework really was the key. I just put myself on the "mental diet"--no negative thoughts allowed for a whole week--just to see what would happen--the results were amazing. It was really hard to do and I slipped off the wagon a few times, but just climbed right back on!!! Good luck to all in facing the sun! Dale ;)

So I am not the only one that is so tired of everyone thinking they are LAZY...have heard it so many times...If they only took the time to understand...To me that makes them the lazy ones....after all I bet we do alot more walking then most of the driving population :) ....I also get so tired of the question Why don't you drive????....And the person that usually asks is one of the people that I have tried to explain this to so many times....The worst part is that most people you try to explain it to will never understand...and most of them think you like the way things are...Most of my family doesn't even understand and there are times that I don't even think my husband understands....enough to make ya scream sometimes... :gasp: Anyway....good luck to all of you, including myself....

I couldn't agree more-isn't it fantastic to find you are not alone and that all over the world we share the same fears and phobias. But Lucky you-by that I mean lucky that you found this site before your avoidance strategies took full control and you stopped driving completely. Our stories are actually identical, except that my massive panic attack happened on a bridge. In the beginning I started avoiding bridges-then worried that the panic attacks could happen on a highways-so started avoiding highways and then bit by bit talked myself into believing that I had better avoid driving full stop! In the end just getting into the car to drive was enough to launch the panic attacks. I have really only just started driving 15 months ago after 4 years, and it has been a slow and steady climb back. I found this site 2 months ago now and am doing the program. I am driving over bridges (not the biggie that I had the attack on yet), am driving for 30 minutes on highways and every day get out and follow my exposure strategy. It’s slow and sometimes I get so cranky with myself and of course that sets me back. My suggestion is that you do the program-it works. It’s wonderful that you have started to address your panic before the thing takes over your life completely. My experience is that my avoidance behaviour was so exhausting and time consuming-that alone is enough of an incentive to get on and address the problem. Good Luck and look forward to following your progress. ;p

Hi, this is a new experience for me joining a support group on-line or anywhere. It's very comforting to know that there are many others out there who feel the same way as I do about driving: FEAR. It's strange because I have always considered myself very independent and strong-willed. I don't know what happened? About 2 years ago, I was driving on the highway, on my way home from school, and I got a panic attack. Ever since than I avoid driving on the highway at all costs. It has gotten to the point where my husband has called me the "backstreet girl" since I refuse to go on the highway. Mapquest is great at finding backroads. However, I'm afraid that I will get to the point of not wanting to drive at all. It's very depressing to me because it seems as if my friends and family don't understand. If only they can know how much I would like to drive on the highway but physically and mentally can't. Also, I just wish I knew why I get panicked at all. The only thing I can think of is that it has been a very stressful 2 years (work, school, life, etc..) Sorry for all of this babble, it's just nice to finally let this all out to a group that truly understand. Thank you!

Hello Everyone, My name is Jennifer and I am a mother of a five year old girl and I am expecting my second in Jan. I do not have my drivers lis. I have had my learners permit countless times but when I get behind the wheel I freeze. I am so afraid to drive that I start to get very shakey. My husband has told me that I really need to drive and I know he is right. I am just afraid to take the next step. A lot of people see me as lazy or dependant they do not realize the real fear that I have. Thanks for listening Jennifer

I am slowly changing my thinking about driving. It is something I have to do to have more options but it is not easy. My question is: Does anyone have problems with night glare? I suffer a night and avoid driving even more so at night. I have been researching night driving glasses, etc. I have ordered several pairs to try on and was wondering if anyone tried them? I tried on my polarized sunglasses as a passenger in the car and they were great in cutting the glare. The are too dark to drive at night and it was suggested that a light grey polarized lens would help. The problem with polarized lenses is that if you go to light the polarization does not work. Driving with the light on in the car helps but is illegal. Any suggestions. Michele

Good for you, Brandi. It sounds like you're taking back control of your own life. There's nothing worse than throwing our hard-earned money away, so your plan seems a good one. Hang in there and keep thinking positive. Let us know how it goes?
