Panic and Hospitalization

for 20 år siden 0 3 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi I am new to this site but not to panic and depression. I am 22 and have been sufffering from panic and depression since I was 12. At first I was skeptical about taking medication but at the age of 17 I lost it and was willing to try anything. I've been hospitalized many times over the past 5 years but I think I've finally found the answer. I am on a combination of meds and I've joined a partial-hospitalization program where I am in therapy with approx. 10 other people from 9am until 3pm daily and every week the hours are reduced and in 6-8 weeks I will finish and start to see a therapist regularly. I know most people think that it is a lot of time but remember nothing is more important than taking care of yourself. It can and will get better just give it time. I am young and almost ended my life because I felt that I was not living. I now know that suicide is the easy way out and I am too good for that. My health insurance got me in contact with this organization. Anything I can do to help please just ask. You don't have to go through this alone and neither do I. (Sometimes it just feels nice to here it) TextText

Hi Tara; I have been in hospital a couple of times for severe panic/depression. Once was for a suicide attempt. I don't think the hospital is the best environment for a panic disorder. There's too much stimulus from other patients with the same and bigger problems than yours. I actually found the stay rather more depressing, and prefer to try and manage outside in my home environment if possible. I think with the right support, and a good doctor that knows what he or she is doing; Nobody with panic disorder need be hospitalized. I wish you luck, and I know it's tough.

Tara, not everyone has side effects w/ these medications. I take Zoloft & I know that some people have side effects but I haven't really noticed any. I know you'll be taking Paxil but that doesn't mean that you will have the same side effects that others do. It's possible that you never feel one single side effect & all the worrying was for nothing. I hope all goes well!!! Chanda

Sorry the prior messsage was regarding to the contacts numbers that Al sent me... sorry for the confusion. I am so touched by the help that everyone is offering it makes me want to cry. Thank you Chandra,Josie, Al and Katie, sometimes this world can seem like such a harsh place. It is so nice to know that there are ppl out there that care. I have been perscibed Paxil 5mg first week and 10mg after that but I think I will start my self out of 2.5mg just for my own consiousness sake and move up from there... I loved the diabetic and insulin metaphor and it is so true I mean if you have cancer and you have to have chemo which has many unpleasant side effects you have to take the chemo or risk losing your life. Although the Paxil may not be as serious of a a situation I need to look at it like that bc essentially I am losing my life in every other way but physically (ie socially , mentally etc). Thank you for all your help Ill keep you updated on the med and panic program progression.

Hi Veryafraid, I have to agree with Katie about meds. I did not welcome the idea of taking meds either but I'm doing so much better with the help of them. Another member wrote a post a while back that I found very positive, it was titled "med free or symptom free". There is no way I can explain this as well as he did but to make it short we basically ask ourselves what is more important, to be medicatin free or symptom free? These medicines are made to help those of us who suffer from panic & if they can help with my symptoms & help me live a "normal" & happy life the I'm just thankful that they are available to me. (I can't imagine suffering from panic/anxiety 100 years ago when nothing was known or available for this problem.) As far as your question about hospitalization, (there was also a post about that a while back) I have never known of anyone being admitted for panic. I have even called local psych hospitals looking for support groups, etc. & was told that they don't treat panic/anxiety. They told me that they only treat "serious" inpatient cases. I know panic is serious to us but to the dr that I spoke with it seemed like no big deal & that actually made me feel good. I'm going to search for that conversation but if I'm not mistaken a couple other people said that they tried to be committed into a psych ward & they wouldn't take them for this problem either. This was a relief for me because I used to fear going crazy & having to go to a mental hospital. Anyway I don't mean to ramble on & on but I hope this makes you feel better.? Chanda

Hi, Tara. I want to make sure you are OK. I've been suffering from this disease on and off since I was 8 (I'm 35 now). I, too have tried being on and off meds. I'm not advocating them for anyone who doesn't want to take them, but for me, I couldn't function without them. I was once asked by a therapist if I were Diabetic, would I not take insulin? It's the same with anxiety meds. Please keep an open mind. I know you want to do it on your own, but sometimes, meds are the best way to go, at least until your symptoms lessen a little. Again, I'm not trying to tell you what to do, I'm just giving you a little insight into what's happened to me. The side effects go away after a while and once you're on the right combination of meds, you're life will turn around and be more positive. You sound so much like me. I think we have a lot in common. Good to see you on the site. Keep in touch. Katie :)
