Hi Georgie, Glad you decided to post. You can get lots of support from this forum. I don't have to use a train (there's not one available), but occassionally I go to a larger city for business and use their trains and buses. I have found it quite nerve-wracking and have sometimes used a taxi because I was feeling too scared to use transit, so I can relate. It can be frustrating, though to not be able to "just do it," like you say. But be kind to yourself! Ignoring your feelings of anxiety or getting angry at yourself for them probably won't help the situation. Different people have trouble doing different things-your thing just happens to be taking transit. Have you thought of how you might approach this with an exposure plan? Diva and Brenna had some great advice on this. Take care!

Hiya Georgie! Boy, can I ever relate to this! I am terrified of trains, planes and buses! My next exposure work plan has to do with managing to take the bus regularly lol!I manage to do it here and there but on other days I end up taking the cab. During Christmas I want to start putting my exposure plan in action so next trimester I can take the bus to school instead of only doing it "when I can". What I did when I wrote my plan down, is well 1. I planned to buy a bus pas so I can take the bus as often as I want with no extra cost lol. Then I broke it down into really small steps at first going with increased length and difficulty. That's how I got through all my other exposure plans! Anyway, sorry I can't be more helpful but I am still coping with this one so hang in there and so will I. :) -Diva

Georgie, This is a very common source of anxiety for many people, no need to feel like a failure, this is a good opportunity to learn about and challenge your negative thoughts. You suggested taking smaller steps to overcome this fear which is a very good idea. You can start off with just riding one stop a day or if you are comfortable with two start with this. When you become comfortable traveling a certain distance, increase it to the next stop. Our member will be around shortly to share their experiences with public transit. hi guys, not too sure whether to put this in this forum or not.. anyway i was just wondering if anyone has tips for catching trains. this time last year, i used to be fine doing this, catching it into the city (around a 30 min trip) nearly everyday for work but now i'm back at home from college and haven't caught a train in four months until today where i think i may have pushed myself too far. i went five stops but just couldn't do any more (the city is another six stops away). on the way back i could only go a few stops, had to get off and then went another few stops back home where i felt really nervy, shaky and kind of like a failure.. has anyone had problems with trains (or any public transport really)? can you offer any advice? maybe i should do it in smaller steps, i guess i am just frustrated that i could do it without thinking twice and now just standing on the train platform makes me nervous. cheers, georgie.
