you sound just like me, I dared to take any anti-depressant yet I so wanted to feel better therefore i broke down and took the lexapro.Almost instantly i stopped cring and the anxiety is still presant right now. i have panic disorder ,depression, and agoraphobia due to panic attacks.anyway i took zoloft for 4 yrs. I didn't want to take it then either, but my doctor looked at me and said I cant make you take it but take it.It will help you to feel better, just give it time. For me the zoloft took awile to work butit did help at the time. After years of using it I noticed it quit working. So on to somthing else. and the same old fear occured again, what's it going to do me?Well i took it it's only been 5 days but i'm doing it.Good luck to you.I hope that you find the courage to take the meds that may help u feel better.i'll keep you in my prayers. e-mail me xtremlady24@aol.com nikole

Hi Lorie, I know you wrote back in July, but I am now going through this anxiety depression and am now where you were at. I used to be on effexor 2 years ago and the only side effect I had was sweating, so I went off. I went a year free of problems and now they are back. I, like you am deadly afraid of meds. I just recently went on St Johns Wart (herbal) and 2 weeks later had my first major anxiety attack. I associated it with the medication because my body is so sensitive to anything. My doctor told me to go off it. I have been off it and my doctor gave me zanax for insomnia. I hate it and am going to quit. The symptoms are still with me, so I don't think it was the St JOhns wart. My neighbor has been on Lexapro for 7 yrs and it has saved her life. I am so close to asking to go on it. Actually my doctor said there is a new one out. I can find out for you. It supposedly as the fewest side effects and less withdrawl symptoms on the market. I have been searching other ways to avoid medication. Have you heard of the Linden method? I hope you are still on these message boards because I would really like to talk to you. Thanks Cheyenne

Hey Gina, I know EXACTLY how you feel. Years ago I used to take Xanax, and I too used to quarter them. I couldn't take a whole one, and they were the lowest dose too. But my fear is incredible when it comes to medication. When I mentioned to my doctor (which I saw today and found out I have a sinus infection) that I still HAVEN'T take the Lexapro she looked at me like I had three heads. No one can understand why I am not trying them. But as silly as they sound to "normal" people they are still MY fears. I haven't ruled out taking them yet. I so much want to feel better. Maybe "we" can help each other. If you decide to take them first, please let me know. And of course, I will do the same. I've added you to my "Buddy List", I hope that's ok. Let me know when your on and maybe we can chat and help each other. So let me know, it would be great to be able to help someone, and just maybe I can make you feel better. Take care, Lorie

I am only talking about what my experience has been, but I would say that you would still be able to take care of your partner and the child while adjusting to the medication.Maybe you should talk to your doctor about your concerns. If you end up not taking it I hope you find something that works well for you.Good luck

Thank you all for your replies. I still have the sample pack sitting in my purse. I stare at it everyday wondering if I'm doing the right thing. But here's my dilemma..........Right now I am taking care of my 5 year old and my brain damaged partner. I am the sole driver, shopper, bill payer, house cleaner, and all around "do-everything" girl. If I drop the ball this house will crumble. There is no one that can help me. I have absolutely NO support. So the worse case scenerio is that I get overly tired or overly anxious, and then what? I still have to function to take care of 2 people that need me. I know if I had a "safe" place to adjust to the pills I would most certainly give it a shot. But it's a risk that I'm not so sure I want to, or "can" take. But boy it would be nice to feel somewhat "normal" again. Even a little less "crazy" would be wonderful! Thanks again! Lorie

Hi Lorie i just wanted to add i dont know anything about lexapro i am on zoloft and i was just as hesitant to take it took me a couple of days to work up the courage and even then i made sure my husband was home(just in case) and i took it right before i went to bed(still do)so if anything was to happen id be asleep at least sounds dumb but it worked for me.I suffered a few minor side affects but they went away after about a week. Now i dont know what id do without my 'happy pills'When i first started taking the zoloft i had a panic after taking it everytime for about a week then i realised it was helping lower my anxiety. So i would give it a go for a couple of weeks if it dosnt help try something else.Take care. Lulu..

Hey! You should not be scared to take medication. When I first started to take medication I was the same as you. I started on zoloft and discountinued use after a week because I was so scared of the medication. A few days after I did that I realised that I had no real reason to be scared and I went on Effexor(which I am still on now). For some reason It got in my head that I would feel diffrent on the medication and was scared, but now I know that's silly.I am so happy I had the courage to take the medication cause now I have little to no Anxiety and back to my life.I would reconsider your dicision to not take lexapro.I hear good things about that medication. So give it a try.The best thing is to talk to people about your fears and face it.Good luck in whatever you do. Sorry I didn't respond faster but I was on vacation. -Vanessa

Hey, don't throw the towel in just yet! First of all, I am not on any medication- but of coursed have considered it many many times. I have spent tons of time looking at many of the main anti-depressant/anti anxiety drug offical websites as well as googling and lexapro does seem to have very few side effects for the majority of people. Lexapro has been mentioned many times on this site before, it sounds like some have had huge success with it. Try entering it in the search on this site. You can always try it and go off of it if you its not agreeing with you. I wish you all the best. :)
