How do you cope with panic when driving??

Hello, I am the same way when I drive -- I used to like to drive, but not anymore...now I seem to be relying on others to drive me...:-( I know it sounds selfish, but it's because I am afraid of panicking while driving...sounds silly? Now I take the public transit everywhere as I live in London and it is so much easier than driving... Hope this helps:-) Best, B

I to have panic attacks while I am driving, I have always been able to drive through them. I few times I have pulled off the interstate though to go through cities. They get me the worst. I have not had much experiance since I found out about coping mechanisms when you feel an attack coming on. I have in the past used these methods. I turn on the airconditioner full blast and turn down the radio. The radio seems to blast through my head. I also bring ice water, it seems to help. A trick I will use in the future is to bring along vitb1. it is real bitter. I am told by my counsler that it will bring your mind back instantly rather then going into the panic mode. Another thing that is suppose to work is lemon peels. I have not trie them yet again because I have not been out on the interstate. I am looking forward to trying these methods and will when I get a reason and the nerve to make another journy down the highway. One of these days I am going to put a camper on the back of my truck and take off down the road with my wife and go see the country. I hope that day comes soon. Good Luck Dave

Hi Dave driving is something i love,as you know youve been fighting this 15 years you said..Im a 5 year man here and at step 1 so to speak..To try and help anxiety takes what it can from you,and attacks a weakness..like with me its health reasons i got gerd, neer really been sick in my life,my first few years anxiety were bad but i knew what i had..i than got gerd, and it found a weakness exposed it,and ran away with it from disease to whatever it might be..so yours is driving traveling i guess, your right if you give in than it wins you know that..try a happy medium, and i say go for it,you did it before, bring some music relax, and i will pray for you..i wish i could help more, anything more just ask.. outlaw

Hi All; I'm just wondering what methods people here have used to cope with panic attacks while driving? I've had panic attacks for about 15 years, and the one thing that still makes me freak out without fail is driving. I have a 10 hour trek I have to make in October, and I'm a nervous wreck just thinking about it. I made this trip once before back in December of last year, and I was a mess most of the way. Any tips or pointers? I was considering just flying, but then I feel like I'm giving into my anxiety. Thanks for the replies. Dave
