Wisdom teeth/Anxiety

Crystal, You need to follow the advice of everyone and have those teeth removed! The one thing for sure about teeth, they don't get better. When I had mine done , I went to an Oral Surgeon so I could be "put under" and have them removed. All I remember is the Doctor putting the I.V. in my arm, and next thing I knew, I was waking up in his recovery room! It wasn't bad at all, and I hate going to the dentist MORE THAN ANYTHING!!! I've had a couple more pulled since then, and it was not much problem at all. HTH! Good Luck!!

Crystal, I have lots of anxiety about seing the dentist too. Let me give you some advice srtraight from the heart... get the wisdom teeth out if your dentist tells you that you need to. Heres why - my dentist told me years ago that mine needed to go. I was thinking that he was crazy and just wanted to make more money because they had not bothered me at all. (I had no dental insurance at that time.) Anyway, I ignored what he told me and went for about 5 years without having them pulled and had totally forgotten all about them until one day out of the blue when the pain hit me. Let me tell you this was the most horrible pain you can imagine too! It felt like I had a toothache in every tooth in my mouth. I couldnt go to work, or even sleep because the pain was so bad. What happened was they were pushing ALL of my teeth forward trying to make room to come through. I didnt know what in the world was causing this. Well, needless to say all of the dentists were booked solid for two months ahead so I had to just make an appointment and suffer until my appointment time came up. Every one told me it was a horrible thing to go through. I heard all kinds of horror stories about wisdom tooth removal which certainly didnt help me any. By the time the appointment day arrived I was so miserable that I didnt care anymore how bad it was, I just wanted then OUT so the pain would stop. Guess what? When it all was over I couldnt believe that I had been so scared. It was a piece of cake! The pain afterward was nothing compared to what everyone had told me it would be. In a couple of days I was totally back to normal and SOOO glad that I had it all behind me. It's better to get it over with before they begin to cause you pain like I did. I promise, it wasn't that bad and I was awake and alert through the whole thing. Sammi

Dear Mary J, Yes, I work at the Dentist Office. I am a Dental assistant. I know wisdom teeth can really be a pain if you leave them too long. they will cause a multiple of other problems. But, if you get them out before they decay everything should be ok. Sometimes they can be hard to get out if they are horizontally impacted. Like yours must be. And yes, they can cause you to lose the teeth next to them if you wait too long. Sorry to hear you have to lose teeth. Implants are GREAT but very expensive. IF you have any questions let me know. Heather: Have you been to the dentist lately and had x-rays taken of your teeth? If your teeth are impacted, it can cause lots of problems...I'm going through the same thing right now and am having 6 teeth (4) of which are my wisdom teeth because they are trying to come through and have caused problems with a couple of my other back teeth. All four of mine are impacted and 3 of them are trying to come through. It has caused my fillings to come out and I never got them seen about so now I have two rotten teeth in the back that also have to come out, one of which has to be replaced with an implant. I didn't know this until the other day when I went for my consultation, but a tooth left unseen about can cause things such as abcesses, cycsts forming in the gums, jaw complications, nerve complications and even tumors in the gums and jaws. So my advice is this....GO TO THE DENTIST! Most likely they will give you anesthesia and you wont feel a thing until the next day. I am having this done in a couple of weeks and I'm quite nervous about it too, but I want to keep my teeth for as long as I can you know? By the way, I am 25 and have been having trouble for a while.

Dear Crystal, I have been a Dental Assistant for the last 10 years and I will tell you this. I understand your anxiety over this because I too suffer from this. But, you have to get those out before they decay. It really is not that big of a deal as you think. The thought of it is scarey but the proceedure is pretty simple if you get them out before the decay or cause problems. I have taken out thousands of teeth in my career and they usually come right out UNLESS you leave them in your mouth too long and problems begin. Wisdom teeth or 3rd molars are almost usless unless you have room in your mouth for them. You cant brush them well because they are so far back and are usually not erupted all the way which means gum tissue is covering part of the teeth. Food gets trapped under the gums and causes decay. which ends up breaking while we are trying to take the teeth out. Normal teeth are hard and strong decayed teeth become soft and brittle. I hope I have helped you understand that you will only cause yourself more problems and pain in the end if you put it off. Your best bet is to see an oral surgon with sedation and get all of them at one time and then your all done. You dont have to worry about having a panic attack cause you will be out quickly and probably wont remember a thing. Take my advice its not that bad I promise! You just be sore afterward but they will give you some good pain mangament. love, Heather Ps: IF you have any other questions let me know I will explain step by step the proceedure and everything if you want to know.

Crystal, You best bet is to talk to your dentist for an evaluation. They will be able to tell you for sure if they can stay or they need to go. Hope this helps, Josie ______________________________ The Panic Center Support Team

I had the same fears about having mine out, too. All four had grown in and my dentist said it was absolutely necessary to have them out. I was 26 at the time. Hadn't been to the dentist in 7 years because of my anxiety. If your dentist has said that they must come out, have all four done at once (if you need all four out). Have you told your dentist that you have anxiety /panic attacks? They are very understanding and would most likely be able to give you a mild sedative to calm you. I had that plus an IV of Fentanyl and Valium. They could have told me that they were removing my head and I wouldn't have cared! Most often the anticipation is much, much worse than the actual deed. Talk to your dentist. It will make you feel better.

Hi. Has your dentist told you that they need to come out? After mine came in i only had to have 2 taken out simply because there wasnt enough room in my mouth for them and there was no surgery he just pulled them. It wasnt any worse then getting any other tooth pulled. I had to have some pulled earlier for braces. It wasnt any different than that. So Id go ask the dentist if you havent allready. You might be getting all worked up over something for nothing. Like Im sure we all do. lol Thats why were all here. Let us know how it turns out. Take care. Linda
