Emotion and Craving???

Hi ML and Freedom26 - Fellow No-embers ML - Please don't feel alone on the surprise heavy cravings. Have been there too a few times recently. I got a bit of a kick out of your statement. " I just smoked. Now I don't". Isn't it something how the smokes went along with just about everything we did day to day. I, too have come too far to give it up but am surprised at the strength of the cravings sometimes yet. I'm sure it can only get better from here. We are doing this. Congrats ML and please check in with Freedom and I any time you've a mind to. Freedom, good to see you and glad things are leveling off. for me as well. Talk to you soon. Hi ML, It's nothing extra or new to be a No-ember, just remember you are one by having quit in November. The participants on this site take it upon themselves to check in with other members that quit in the same month and provide additional support to each other. I'll make a post right now.... Actually, my smoking was an addiction to nicotine, I would presume, as I had been a smoker for so long. As I wrote on another thread, it seemed everything I did had a cigarette involved, even down to brushing my teeth at night. If that's not addiction, I don't know what is. Now, not smoking and having the emotional upset that I did, I couldn't figure out if craving a cigarette was somehow involved so I came here and asked. Believe me, I've been through highly emotional stuff in my life and I never gave smoking any credit for helping or hurting. I just smoked. Now I don't. How do I get into the November monthly check-ins, Freedom? I think I really need some buddies. ;) My Milage: My Quit Date: 11/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 82 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,640 Amount Saved: $508.40 Life Gained: Days: 10 Hrs: 13 Mins: 36 Seconds: 12

Congrats ML for not lighting up and getting your feelings out on this site instead. I had also gone through something similar over the last few weeks and glad that things are settling back in place. You are right smoking would not prove anything to anyone except to yourself and what would that make you feel like? Is it completely normal but be happy that you are strong enough not to give in to temptation. Congrats on 80 days of being smoke free! This makes you an honorary member of the November No-embers. Please join Moss and I at our monthly check ins to see how we are all doing. It's like a buddy system based on the month you quit! Congrats again! Emotions are my biggest trigger. I have always hid behind a veil of smoke to upkeep the smiley happy make everybody else feel good image I have. I would drowned out sorrow and depression with a pack of cigarettes. I have found though, that as difficult as it is, without smoking, the feellngs are actually easier to deal with, you dont have the nicotine stimulating the situation. I am calmer and actually look at what is happening in a more reasonable and rational manner. No more hiding, face it full force, that is what I am doing to find out who the "me" inside really is when there isn't a mask to hide behind. Good for you for keeping strong. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/6/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 68 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,040 Amount Saved: $255.00 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 13 Mins: 27 Seconds: 20

Hi ML, Nicotine does numb emotions, so, emotional situations may trigger some cravings, but also, you may be feeling the full force of your emotions for the first time since you quit. We stuffed all our emotions with nicotine..now we have to let them out, deal with them without smoking. You have a great quit going. Life will always be filled with emotions..the good, the bad, and the ugly. We can do it all without smoking. It just takes some time to adjust. Wonderful, 80 days! Be proud. new me My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/26/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 262 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,288 Amount Saved: $1,310.00 Life Gained: Days: 36 Hrs: 11 Mins: 58 Seconds: 4

You bet emotions are tied to cravings, espoecially if you are an emotional person to start with! If you look back at how most people smoked, they buried emotions with cigarettes. Whenever you were angry hurt or even happy you smoked alittle more. Now that you are trying to quit, there's no more nicotine to drown out the feelings so thats why we need to learn how to deal with emotions and let them go. Do I make sense? :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 342 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 8,550 Amount Saved: $3,608.10 Life Gained: Days: 44 Hrs: 21 Mins: 45 Seconds: 43

What Rusty said. I had a situation this week that set triggers off all of my alarms. I was hurt, angry and just didn't care and all I wanted to do was smoke at it. What would that have gained? Nothing, and then I would have been mad at me again and have to start all over again. The one thing I have learned in life is that whatever it is it will pass. Smoking will not change a darn thing except your quit day. Absolutely. Emotional issues can always be a trigger, because we used to light up as soon as we got mad, sad, upset, or needed a reward. We don't do that anymore, but sometimes those old triggers die hard. You are doing great...congratulations on 80 days and on ONE THOUSAND SIX HUNDRED CIGARETTES NOT SMOKED!
