Trish we have a lot in common. My daughter will be leaving in February for college. We live in Missouri and she will be going to New York. I didn't think I was too concerned about that yet. We did have a dear friend die (only 15) suddenly and that really upset me and still does. We left for Mexico about one month after that and while we were there I had my first full blown panic attack. I thought I was reacting to something and maybe sick, but it was the rapid heartbeat, shallow breathing, out of body feeling, can't make it stop stuff and it really scared me. Then just a couple of nights ago (almost a month later) I had the BIGGIE for 5 hours. I actually decided the reason people kill themselves must be because of pressure like that night! My husband not only works nights but out of town. I can't say I worry much about that, but I know I am very stressed and absolutely hate feeling like a single parent so much of the time. He doesn't seem to think it's that big of a deal either and that upsets me. I don't feel supported at all. So, it almost seems hormonal and due to a sudden trauma and added stress. I have an appointment with a therapist tomorrow and I cannot wait! Thanks for replying.

Rosey, Ive had this for 13 yrs, and often wondered about my children having it since I do. Believe me, you will be able to see predictive behavior before hand it any of your children do experience it, although we pray they dont, the good thing is they have someone who will be educated about it, and can truly understand panic, that takes a load of their shoulders. My son is the one who is exhibiting anxiety, not panic, and I pray it doesnt go there. But it has to do with school mostly, and when he gets sick, the going back, and people asking him what was the matter. During these times, he gets insomnia and irritable bowels, but not full blown panic, we talk about it. Since you recently started experiencing yours, had you had major stressors the months before, even though at the time you felt as if you were handling it well? Have one of your children gone off to college, or married? Mostly it is the ones that you feel more closer too, the older ones, and seperation anxiety, its a whole new ballgame, as my daughter is 19 and my attacks worsened as she was gone to school in another city, away with friends on weekends, I just was worried about her, and yet afraid for myself as she was the oldest, and my husband works night shift, the anxiety was worse at night for me. Becky, panic attacks are new to me. I'm 41. I have 4 children, 20, 19, 10, and 6. So at 8...you started this (what I have experienced as terrifying) thing, do you know why? How can I help my children if they should happen to go through this and not know it? Can you tell I'm a worrier and that's probably one of the reasons I have this problem. Thanks for any advice or comment.

Hi Becky, You have come to the right place. Everyone here definately understands where you're coming from. I have suffered from panic and anxiety for a very long time. It can be really tough. This site has helped me alot. Its good to know that others are coping with the same thing you are and you are not alone. Are you taking any meds? If so what kind? You should try the panic program on the left of the screen. It is a slow process but it helps. Everyone has to deal with this in their own way and find out what works for them. The best advice I can think of to give you is to read up as much as you can about your disorders and try to get to a point where you can tell yourself,(and believe it) "I will control my panic from now on, I am not letting it control me!" That may sound crazy to you but it's helped me. I have spent many hours online reading everything I can find about this disorder. I decided that it must be true that panic wont kill me so I have to firmly remind myself of that everyday. I'm sure you will get lots of good advice and support from the members here so hang in there and keep posting. This place has been a lifeline for me. I hope you find what you're looking for. Good Luck! Samantha

Hi, Becky. I'm fairly new to this site as well. Unfortunately, I'm not new to Panic Disorder. I've been suffering from it since I was 8, although I didn't know what it was until I was much older. It's great that you've been diagnosed so soon. Now you are on the right road and you've reached the right people. I've been reading and posting on this site for only a few weeks, but it's been very healing. I've suffered from this disorder for 20 some years now, so I'll be happy to answer any questions you might have. I'm also hear to listen. Welcome to the site. I hope you'll get as much comfort from it as I do. Katie
