How much of an effect does caffiene have on us when we are quitting?

For me I need less coffee now and less cola. I have one cup in the morning (it was never a trigger) and 1 cola a day, I used to drink a lot. :)Marie My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 119 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,798 Amount Saved: $476 Life Gained: Days: 15 Hrs: 19 Mins: 29 Seconds: 19

Den, I see it as a reward. Sometimes Mrs Ed offers to make me a coffee, and then forgets(it's her age). I then get that feeling I used to get when smoking, for example when stuck at work in a long meeting and having to do without a 'reward' when your brain expects it. And Phil's point about the alcohol? I am the same, a drink never triggers anything off for me. Yes, it must be kept in check, but as far as I'm concerned it's another reward. Mr Ed :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 238 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 7,150 Amount Saved: 1785 Life Gained: Days: 39 Hrs: 17 Mins: 42 Seconds: 50

They told me at the beginning of my quit (I had laser therapy) to avoid caffeine and just stick with water (7-8 glasses a day). I am now back to the regular amount of caffeine now, but still find that I like water better, so am staying with a lot of that (4-6 glasses a day. Everyone is different, if it others you, try lemonade or fruit juice. Smoothies are excellent as well. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 197 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,364 Amount Saved: $689.5 Life Gained: Days: 18 Hrs: 7 Mins: 31 Seconds: 22

Hi Den, If caffiene is a trigger for you, stay clear of it for awhile... Any trigger can be BIG at the beginning of a Quit as you and your Quit are quite vulnerable, dear one... I know I smoked with coffee in the morning... It took me about 3 months before I could "test" a cup of coffee, and found I was good to go :) Protect your Quit with everything right now ~ as it's like a small child in need of protection and care. Hey Den I had the same trigger, but then I couldn't figure if it was the coffee of just waking up seeing that I would immediately do both. I missed my coffee the first quit day. Then decided I would do a piece if Nic gum right before getting out of bed, then change where I have my coffee, from before. I found it was still a thought but no stronger then any other occasioanl oh man I want a cig? NO I DON"T..Thoughts. Every one is for sure diff. Just what ever you do don't jeapordize your quit if it's a trigger avoid it. YOUR QUIT LOOKS GOOD ON YA' Aloha Nalu My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/5/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 3 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 79 Amount Saved: $15 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 9 Mins: 4 Seconds: 30

Den Sorry I dont have time to read this entire thread as I only check in once in a while. Your experience with coffee and cig craving is what we used to call a "trigger" or triggering event. Thats when a certain activity or feeling causes you to want to smoke along with it. I wasn't about to give up my coffee so that trigger went away rather quickly...and the cafeine intake I had to cut in half because my body could no longer handle that much caffeine. Smokers metabolize caffeine twice as fast as non-smokers. That means you can drink quite a bit more coffee (or sodas). It's generally a good idea to cut back, or even forego your caffeine when you quit smoking, especially if you find yourself shaky or unable to sleep. If you want more info, do do a web search on 'caffeine smoking'.
