How much of an effect does caffiene have on us when we are quitting?

I used to drink 10-12 cups of coffee a day. I love coffee. But funnily somehow once I quit smoking I did not crave the coffee anymore. So now I drink maybe 1-2 cups and I noticed some days I don't drink any at all. I did not try to stop, it just happened by itself. My husband on the other hand (also quit) has been drinking MORE coffee than ever. He says that this is all I have left and I have to have something. Oh Well, to each his own. We are all different people with different reactions. I think the answer to that question is different for everyone. For me coffee wasn't a trigger because I didn't smoke in the morning. However, I don't drink iced tea or any sweet iced drinks except water because they are triggers. Having said that, I think that too much caffeine will raise anyone's anxiety level. I still have one or two coffee's in the morning but resist the temptation to have one in the afternoon because I am usually already running on "high" as far as the anxiety meter goes. If you enjoy coffee and it's a trigger, by all means drink it...just don't overdo it. (Decaff is pretty good too!) And...by the way...congrats on 4 days! Way to go! I can only share my own experience: - Before, I used to drink coffee accompanied by one or 2 cigarettes, specially in the morning, after getting up! :) - When I decided to quit smoking, in the first 3 days, I avoided taking coffee; and drank only green tea, soft drink, cold water, ... (with the help of NRT lozenges & an NRT inhaler to cope with nicotine cravings). - From the Day 4, I started drinking coffee again, but then, I no longer felt the urge to smoke while drinking it ... - Now, just like this morning, I drink coffee slowly and fully enjoying it! In fact, coffee now tastes better than before! :) Of course, other quitters will have different stories to tell you! Dont think its coffee I drink more since I stopped! Strange thing is that alcohol helps me stop(Dangerous) but I reall dont want to smoke if I have a beer. Good question, however I'm of no help on this one. I've always been attached to sweet drinks, preferrably tea. I'm so used to drinking it, that when I quit it didn't even bother me. I never stopped drinking it. But, it's different for everyone. It really depends on how strong your willpower is to quit and stay quit. I personally never experienced that part w/ caffiene but because I would occasionally have a beer or glass of wine, I would want to smoke. But I stopped having a beer or a glass of wine since Feb. But for me, it was stress or accomplishment that brought me to smoke. Like CobenFan, I also did laser therapy. I averaged 12 bottles of water during the first week of my quit. I'm still drinking around 6 or 3 liters of water per day but I've reintroduced some things. I went caffeine free for the first 30 days - no pop, coffee, tea etc. I also cut out beer because that was a major trigger for me. Wine though was ok - I usually drink wine at non smoking venues. Anyway, after 90 days nothing is a trigger for me except coffee - I tried one the other day and it really affected me - perhaps partly because it has so much more caffeine than tea it was a jolt... Hi Den, In my opinion it's not the cafeine but the link in your head: Coffee-cigaret. You're used to drink coffee and smoke. I drank tea in the beginning of my quit because tea-cigaret was not a link to me because I never drank tea in the morning. When I drank tea I had no urge for a cigaret what's so ever. It was not a habit. After 5 days I could drink coffee without the urge to smoke. Keep the quit, love Dutch. I found that the caffenine effect was accelorated when I quit. Being a coffee lover, I limited myself to one cup a day. I've read the best thing to do is drink plenty of water to flush your system if going cold turkey.
