Thanks all, I didn't realise how to show the quit meter, that should be rectified now. I think I agree with Patrick that I'm willing to do all the obsessing and ruminating it takes for as long as it takes, but I kinda police my thoughts, if they're going towards smoking fantasy or complaining I reel them in and consciously think some grateful thoughts. But i'm hoping it won't be too amny more weeks before I can get an hour off here and there elaine

Hello!!! The preoccupation goes away slowly. I can now go all day without thinking of cigarettes- and if it weren't fpr this site, I don't think I could spontaneously tell you how many days it has been since my quit... The annoying thing, for me at least, was that I never had the feeling of "now I'm over it". I once had an "aha-effect" at the end of my second month when I realised that I hadn't thought about smoking all day. The obsesive thoughts still haunt me from time to time, though. But it's nothing compared to those first weeks when I could not allow myself to be unoccupied for even 10 minutes... Keep going! Hi Ellis, I am pretty new here. This is not my first quit, but I think I have approached this one with a different mind set. Before I thought of it as "trying" to quit. This time is I QUIT. I have told a lot of people this time.. also. I am not thinking of myslef as a smoker..but someone who doesn't smoke. I realize from coming here... the 4 little letters N O P E (not one puff ever) will have to be my mantra ... that is where I have fallen by the wayside before.. just one puff (there is NO such thing). I am also doing the program here, little rewrds.. and I am putting the money for cigarettes away..........for something I wish to buy .. I remind myslef i might as well have been smoking dollar bills.. no more cleaning dirty ashtrays. and seeing butts and filters around. Try to think positive.. this site is great for hints and ideas... and support My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/10/2008 Smoke-Free Days: 11 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 187 Amount Saved: $29.45 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 15 Mins: 34 Seconds: 28

Since this is the most important thing I can do for myself right now - and I am desperate to get it right without fault - I don't mind that I'm a bit obsessive about the Quit; when what I'd really like to do is set up a lecture theatre and have just my nephews and my son there in front of me so I could spew all I've learned from this site and from the personal knowledge I have now that I'm in a strong quit mode... Also I think it's essential that I come in here every day and read and support and that makes me constantly aware of just how important the quit has been for all of you and now, for me!! Obsession is GOOD! Eilis59, It's different for everyone, try to occupy yourself with other activities and distractions if you find that you're thinking about your quit too much. Sylvie, Bilingual Health Educator

Ellis My downfall during my first two quit weeks was always dwelling n the fact that i was quitting and how much it sucked. This made it so much harder than it had to be for me. I turned negative thoughts to positive thoughts and started keeping my mind busy with other things and it made a HUGE difference in how my mood was and how much better my quit became when i didn't focus all my attention on how much it sucked to quit. Bear is right, i still love coming here to check out my quit meter, overwhelms me and makes me feel so much better. Hi Eilis I realy varys from person to person.Generaly the further you get along in your quit the less you'll be preoccupied. It's important to distract yourself with other things, things you enjoy or that your interested in this keeps your mind of smoking. You might start by posting your quit meter so we can keep an eye on you. ;p My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/20/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 338 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,084 Amount Saved: $3,380.00 Life Gained: Days: 82 Hrs: 5 Mins: 47 Seconds: 41

Hi Eilis, I know what you are saying, I was very much the same in the first week it was all I could think about, I could spend hours in my own thoughts just thinking about it and get nothing done. It is though But It will get easier I find now its every other couple of days I think about it and Its not nearly as bad. All our buddies on the site call it hell week and it is but you can do it keep going, just one day at a time. I am sure someone who is longer on this journey can tell you more. Good Luck N.O.P.E.
