i stayed home today i knew if i went out the possibility of going to the quick trip for a pack was high. obviously i can't do that every day but it did help to take control and just stay in. Yesterday was my first day. i caved, bought a pack and smoked 10. I honestly thought about signing in as a new person and starting over but that seemed dishonest and frankly like the all or nothing thinking i'm constantly subjecting myself to. So in the name of claiming the truth my first day i smoked 10 but my last day i smoked 23 so that's 13 less and i cut the last 10 into tiny little pieces and threw them in a jar with water, something a book i read on quitting once suggested, you smell it when you are tempted. And it didn't seem fair to the people on here who seem real and not lying so i claim my less than perfect day and now am battling the last four hours of day 2 where i fell yesterday it seems so far to go, four little hours, 240 minutes and somehow if i can make it that will be something. Hello Trying In Kansas, The second day of my quit...I bought a pack of cigs first gas station I passed...it was like I was possessed or something. I opened them, pulled out one cig and smoked half of it. As I'm puffing, I'm thinking about the nicoteen addiction and I'm visualizing the black smoke entering my lungs, and I said outloud in my car...this is enough...I threw the rest of the lit cig out the window, then grabbed the entire pack and tossed it out onto the highway (hopefully the racoon's are having a party). Good for you for destroying the rest of the pack. You can do this, and we are here to help. You have to make it past the corner stores and gas stations. Don't be afraid of driving past them...I promise you won't die from not buying a pack...but if you continue smoking, your putting your health at risk. Stay strong... Golly you got a lot of support here. Just wanted to weigh in as in your corner. I just realized that if you took up boxing, you couldn't smoke with the gloves on. Well, if you got desperate enough, you would figure out a way, but I'm sure it wouldn't be pretty. Get serious. Make a plan, have a back up and be tough. This really is a bumpy ride. We're here for you. Dear Kansas, I can't tell you the number of times I've done exactly what you did, start a quit then cave on day one or hour one or whatever. But you know what? There are a whole bunch of places that we can stop ourselves and KNOW that we are CHOOSING to blow our quit. I can name a few: getting in the car, driving to the store, parking at the store, picking up my purse, getting out of the car, locking the car, walking to the door, opening the door, going through the door, walking up to the register, scanning the racks of pretty colored packages for "my" brand, asking for "my" brand, pulling out wallet, getting money out of wallet, handing it to clerk, taking change, picking up pack of smokes, walking out of store, opening up package, taking one out, etc. That's to name a few places where it can occur to us that WE ARE CHOOSING to smoke. CHOOSING. Making a conscious choice. Picking. So now we have another choice. Do we want to live our lives addicted to and poisoned by these things or will we proclaim ENOUGH! And claim our lives back? It's up to us. Are we more determined to quit than we desire to smoke? And I'm also going to make one more suggesstion: How about changing your name to "Quitting in Kansas" as opposed to "trying"? You can do that in your glove compartment. There is something to be said for positive projection. kansas, hello I am a kansan too. All I can say is I didn't think I could make it this far, but I have and you can too. You have to be strong and most of all believe in yourself and I mean that. I knew when I quit that if I gave in once for just one cig then I would do just what you did and would have sucked down 10 of them before I knew it. One of my biggest supports was coming here. It really makes a difference! All these people here have or are going thru exactly what you are and they understand. You can come here just to gripe and complain or whatever but you will have the support you need. My mom was diagnosed with COPD almost 2 yrs. ago and I just spent my last Christmas with her, it is so hard seeing a loved one going thru this kind of disease. I had to quit because there is no way I want to put my kids thru the same thing. But most importantly, you have to do it for yourself. You are worth it and you deserve it! Trying, What made you cave? What was going through your mind at the very minute you decided to buy a pack? Knowing that will help you combat the temptation the next time it happens. Do NOT let this "slip" be in vain. Learn from it. Learn more about yourself and what triggers are the worst for you. Otherwise, if you don't learn from history, you're doomed to repeat it. Do NOT let that happen. Make a plan for the next time you think you might smoke. It should start with "before I smoke, I must..." and include at least 3 things that you will do before you smoke. They could be post here and waif for 10 responses (I recommend that one the most... this one thing alone has saved my quit more times than I can count... it's the times I DIDN'T do this that I screwed up.), get a quit buddy and email/IM him/her before you smoke, read your reasons for quitting 10 times, call a friend who supports your quit, if you have kids - look at your kids' faces for 5 whole minutes and think about what you are doing to them, smell that jar of nasty cigarette water and think about the fact that that's going into your LUNGS each time you smoke, etc... you can come up with some others that will work for you... these are just my suggestions. But the fact is that you MUST have a plan for what you will do when you are about to cave. It only takes a second to light that cigarette, but it could take a lifetime to get back the courage and determination to quit again! If you want to quit badly enough, you're going to have to fight tooth and nail for a while for this quit. And believe me, it IS worth it! Crave the Quit!
