pounding heart

Jackie I know exactly what you mean about traveling any distance away from home. Two of my children live 2 1/2 hours away, so if I want to see them on any kind of a routine basis I have to drive there. When I am feeling well I don't even have a second thought about it, so I know I can do it and I won't die! However, when I have an episode I feel like a mouse. Ears feel plugged and I stiffen up and feel tingly. I have many times felt like I must be having a heart attack. If I ever do, I'll think it's a panic attack. They do pass. I have had panic/anxiety on/off for 18 years. Mostly now I have it under control. I have other medical issues that go hand in hand with it with irritable bowel syndrome, acid reflux and fibromyalgia. However, I am a stubborn person and am determined that I am not going to be one of those sad people that just sits around at home and "let it get me!" I tell myself to get up off my butt - I CAN DO IT! I WILL SURVIVE yet again and I go the gym almost every day to work it out, even if I feel like ****... KEEP BUSY... It keeps you from focusing on the panic and tricks your brain into thinking you are o.k. Eventually it will take hold. Just look at it this way - you can feel bad at home or you can get out and feel bad doing something that just might make you feel better. This site is great... keep talkin' ;p

jackie, Please feel free to roam the site at your own pace. If you look to the left of the screen under "TOOLS" you will find many supportive tests. These tests are not diagnostic tools and are not a replacement or substitute for a physician's advice. The purpose of these tests is to prepare you with information that you can present to your physician. When you're finished the test, you can either print your Final Report or email it directly to your doctor. We also have developed a Panic Program. This program is 12-weeks and involves the tools mentioned above. Each session is based on the previous session, so we strongly advise that you work slowly through the program and not jump ahead. If you have any question or concerns with our €œTOOLS€, you can contact at support@paniccenter.net. We are the Support Specialist for The Panic Center and are open to any questions or concerns you may have. Looking forward to hearing from you soon! i am a new member here and i am so glad to have found this support group!! it is so hard to talk to someone and try to explain what you're going through, who has never experienced this. i have been dealing with panic attacks for the last 6 mos. and they come out of nowhere. they have progressed so much i think i have developed agorphobia. i travel about 20 miles one way to work and i have a panic attack every single day on the way to work. i am terrified to be far away from home, that i am not going to be able to get help in time if something happens to me. we live close to a hospital, thank god!! i have been there many times, and after going through all the tests, they tell me it is anxiety attacks. i guess i just can't accept that because in my mind i think i am having a heart attack!! any advice on this would really help me thanks- jackie

Because dear, mostly that is what it is. We just can not accept that. We want to go back and do those test again, we WANT that doctor to sit down look us in the face and say "I PROMISE you are okay" but they just tend to dismiss you. We crazies gotta stick together...lol

How did you even get them to look at you? I am 31 and when I have gone to the hospital all they do is wait for my BP to drop & send me home. This is why I am developing anxiety-I am so nervous they are ignoring me as someone that is too young for something fatal & someone that looks worried

Wow!!! That last post helped me a great deal!!! It is assuring to hear your hospital story..in a twisted sort of way. My heart pounds too. so much that I can see my shirt move and see it beating in the chest area. It freaks me out so bad and I ALSO think...they missed something on those test!!!!! It is so scary and constantly I tell myself "in 5 more minutes I am calling 911"

outlaw - I know what you mean. At 4:00 a.m. Monday morning I woken out of a dead sleep by 4 very strong "surges" in my heart then it started beating so hard i felt like I was going to throw up. I thought I must be having a heart attack so i quickly found some plain aspirin chewed it like you are supposed to do called 911 opened the front door, turned on the porch light just in case I died of a heart attack before they arrived. I layed down on the couch & kept telling my self to calm down & tried to take deep breaths. When the paramedics got there they hooked me up to a portable ekg, pulse monitor & took my blood pressure. They told me I was NOT having a heart attack but my blood pressure was 140/80 - I am always 110/70 - so I guess the freaking out caused my blood pressure to skyrocket. They told me I should probably go to the hospital so they could draw blood b/c if I was having cardiac issues certain enzymes would be released into my blood. So off I go to the emergency room they take my blood, hook me up to a heart monitor and gave me some Ativan- GREAT STUFF. They confirmed that I wasn't having a heart attack & by this time my blood pressure & pulse rate had returned to normal but they offered to admit me for stress test, ecg, mri, x-rays etc. which took all day, I was also hooked up to a heart monitor all day as well. As I am sitting there in the bed hooked up to a heart monitor which is showing TOTALLY NORMAL I can feel my heart flipping, flopping, pounding and it wasn't showing up on the monitor - WHAT IS UP WITH THAT!!! anyway after being prodded, poked, x-rayed, ecg, mri etc. The doctor comes in shows me all the tests tells me I am perfectly fine & to go home. I asked how come I was still feeling the palps & the heart rate monitor wasn't picking up all the activity. He said that my heart rate ( althought I felt it was pounding, flopping etc.) was showing totally normal activity for the past 12 hours he assured me again I was fine. Here I am 2 days later and I feel absolutely fine but I am still freaked out by what happened. Please don't worry you are not alone

i used to get that also, but then it eventually went away. Now i find that every so often i can feel my heart skip a beat. Another one of my friends who gets panic attacks also has the skipping a beat sensation. I used to think that the doctors missed something with me also, but if you've had it done a number of times, how many can be wrong? You just have to try and relax and i suggest practice breathing or guided imagery
