brenda samE has been used since 1972 the major study on samE compared it to impramine a tricylic anti depresant, because samE is a natural substance derived from the amino acid methione it can not have a patten put on it so there is no intrest for drug companies to study

JM, Sounds like you've had a tough time trying to find something to give you the relief you need. I know it is quite a struggle for some. I've been very fortunate it seems. Hope you do well coming of the med you're working with right now. You're in my thoughts.

JM, SamE has been used in Europe for depression but according to the studies I've read--it only has about a 20-21 year history as well. I'm not aware of any study beyond that time period. Do you have a study perhaps I haven't read or seen? I'm seriously interested----it's one of the options one of my professors and I have been discussing (in relation to students with depression).

Jeannie, Sometimes reading on the net can be the worst thing to do when you're in the midst of panic. Discuss your situation with your Dr. and work with him/her in developing a plan that will suit you and your circumstances. I couldn't make a decision about meds when my attacks first started in 1999 so the Dr. made it for me. SSRI's gave me back my life and stopped the panic. After about 18 months I came off the meds and was panic free until June of this year. I made the decision, myself, to go back on meds a week ago to help me get the panic under control again. It's what was right for me. Don't make other people's realities your own----your situation is as unique as you are. Talk to your Dr. about your concerns and see what he/she has to say.

Jeannie it is your choice to take meds and they may work for you,i suffer from severe panic and depresion and in the beggining meds did help me,but not in the long run,in my opinion ssris have not been subjected to long term clinical studies ,infact they are only put on a 6-8 week trial before going to market, have you tried anything natural like samE which has many long term studdies done in europe ,and in italy is the most prescribed antidepresant

Like any medicine, it often takes years for us to know what the long term effects will be. SSRI's haven't been around that long---some 15-20 years. I'm sure we are just now beginning to see data that suggests there are possible effects not recognized early on. This is the case with many medicines as they are produced, marketed, and used over a period of time. The other side of this issue though, is what would many, many people who are immobilized by panic have done without SSRI's? There's always a risk... SO---I'm assuming JM that you don't take meds? Or are you using natural alternatives? Or are you in the process of trying to decide which is the lesser of two evils?

Hi, Wow I really didn't need to hear this right now, I know when I see my DR she will put me on meds. I am worse than I have ever been in my life with Anxiety/Panic Attacks. I can't rest at all. Now I am wondering, should I take the chance to take one of these meds knowing that they could make me sicker. I read too many articles on the net, and very few are supportive of the medication, all I hear is they cause terrible things to the body, including more anxiety. I wish I knew what to do, where is the hope sort of thing, ya know. Does everyone take meds? Do they really help? I can't imagine taking a drug that will make me feel worse, that is the last thing I need? Jeannie
