caffeine and panic

Me, I did. I only ate chocolate every so often that wasnt too bad. But I drank a pot of coffee a day, morning, noon and night. I cut it at first half and half with decaf, weird before I was told to get off caffeine, the coffee actually was my relaxer in a way. I could drink a cup 1/2 before bed, and not have it affect my sleep. I did experience some headaches at first with caffeine withdrawls, but they didnt last long, I would take Aleve for it. And gradually, got to decaffinated coffee only. Took me about week and half total. And decaf coffee is twice as expensive as regular!! I do drink decaffinated chamoille tea at night sometimes, it does have a sedating affect for those hard to fall asleep nights.

Did anyone out there give up caffeine completely? I went to a heart doctor and he told me my heart was skipping a beat and that was the cause of the feelings I had which I thought was air hunger. Well he had me wear a heart monitor and do a stress test and they did an ultrasound on my heart. I passed the stress test and won't get the other results till 5 more days. I was wondering how long it takes for the caffeine to completely leave the body. I did a search on the net and came up with all kinds of answers so I was wondering who out there gave it up completley meaning coffee, tea and chocolate and medicines containing it. Lydia

RISKING SOUNDING COCKY... I believe i'm pretty intelligent...I am writing a novel right now and am about halfway done. I just want my braind to chill out. I have been doing a lot of reading in BRAIN LOCK about physical/chemical differences in the OCD brain such as hypermetabolism in the frontal lobes...Klonopin helps sooo much but I hate taking it.

Nurseboy; if you have racing thoughts, maybe you are also highly intelligent? You are most likely not going crazy, but perhaps if you took am IQ test you would find you have a very high score. You probably think faster than most people. Especially working in a trauma unit...your job must set you up to panic! Please take care!

Nurseboy, I thought you said if you had four coffees in one day you felt like you "could jump off high buildings and fly, super hyper"...It just reminds me of a friend who took Xanax and probably lots of coffee too; and he used to run around a huge city block late at night to burn off the hyperness. He also took up rock climbing at this point. I believe he was too high from his medications; but hey, maybe it was just the coffee....???? Sorry I upset you. Your job is obviously very stressful; and I don't think I could do such work at all. In fact I'm not working at the moment at all, because of my panic attacks. But my husband works at home, and he always has the coffee pot on, and I usually give in and have it about 3-4 cups a day. Like I said, if I take enough medication to stop the panic, then I begin to feel too tired, and I really feel the need for a coffee now and then. I don't always have it, but I don't want to say "never" either.

Last Saturday I drank a Mountain Dew on the way to work. I was at work for about forty five minutes and suddenly my heart started to race. For the first thirty minutes sweat drip down my face and my shirt got soaked. I asked my self, "What is bothering you? Nothing is bothering me; I am still a little upset that I got a C on my eight page typed paper that I spent hours on, but hey I only need a 2.5 GPA for my scholarship to renew next semester and I have a 3.0 GPA. It is spring break now and I can chill for a week." I searched for a thought or something that could of caused my heart to race but there wasn't. I tried to think myself out of it. I sat down for about ten minutes and took deep breaths and drank a lot of cold water. My heart still continued to race. I looked in a mirror and watched the right artery in my neck bulge in and out. I made myself go on. Five hours later I got off work. I sat down and finally a hour later my heart stopped racing. I went to the doctor Thursday. I may have a minor problem with a heart valve. Go back next Thursday for more test. For years I thought I was just having panic attacks when I was actually having palpitations. My Doctor tolled me, "No more Mountain Dew." My doctor explained that a combination of stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, caffeine, or even excitement feeds my problem. Staying up all night studying and a consuming a bunch of caffeine is part of college life. Has now been two days since I have had any caffeine and my head hurts, I am tired, and feel that I do not think as clear. I do not know how I will make it through my fourteen hour Monday and Wednesdays without my Mountain Dew. On those days I work eight hours, study three hours, and go to school three hours. I will have to find something new that gives me energy and makes me feel alert. Does anyone have any Ideas? Hmmm.... My doctor said, "no more Mountain Dew." He did not say no more Mellow Yellow, Surge, Dr. Pepper, or Pepsi.

I find that I have a serious love-hate relationship with caffine and with sugar. Over the past year or so I have really be trying to cut back on both for my own sanity. Unfortunately for some it is harder than for others. Personally I struggle to avoid them, but being a student there are just some nights where I have really no other choice (or so it seems). I think you just have to listen to your body, especially during situations where you know it oculd get really intense. Krissy Nurseboy: BTW I also have both Panic disorder and OCD. I agree with you that some times are better than others. These are the times when it might be okay to go for a cup or two, but during the not so great times just try to cut back to one or soemthing.

i think everyone has ups and downs with panic/anxiety/ocd ...as we have periods when they bother us a lot and when they are minor. that doesn't mean that we are bipolar. when i feel good...especially with too much caffeine and my head isn't bothering me...i get hyper and excited because i return to my baseline mentally and i can do something leisuerly like read a book or go to the zoo without feeling crazy. on other days the panic is so bad i do get depressed. that is normal. i have been reading BRAIN lOCK and it is helping alot.
