Working out my exposure plan

When I was had to explain to my boss about being stricken with anxiety, he was not cognizant about the topic. He felt that one would have to have circumstances driving the anxiety. Although I could pinpoint things that worsened my diagnosis, it was beyond what he would feel in the same situation. There is a lady I know who is touring around trying to educate employers about mental health issues. I'm sure my employers were completely in the dark. I imagine coworkers draw their own conclusion with my being placed on disability then gradual return to work. Sometimes it seems easier to avoid the subject. Imagine that, thinking that avoidance is the answer.

Hi Pet, This stuff can get a bit exhausting. Take your time! I know I am! Have you considered just picking one goal to work on, like standing in lines? If you're wanting to stand in line a long time, try to think of a store in your town that is really busy and the busiest time of day. In my case it would be Tim Horton's at 8AM or noon or the grocery store at 5PM. Or maybe if it doesn't take 30 to 60 mins to stand in the first line, you could just go and find another line to stand in! First the coffee shop, then the grocery store. Hope this helps and good luck :-)

Thank you for the suggestions. They are very helpful. I'm going to try to use them and see which ones my boss would approve.

Hi kittcatt, Being prepared will help. Is there some way you could find out some of the questions and concerns that he will be asking? Your health care provider may also be able to guide you with what type of questions you can expect. You may already be aware, or you could possible find out over the phone? This way you could prepare a written list of replies. You could even bring them with you to the interview if you found it helpful. You could also prepare by "role-playing" and "practicing" for this interview with someone that you trust. I am not sure what line of work you are in, but I do know a few people who were in a similar situation and they had someone that they trusted (a fellow co-worker) attend the interview with them. (Again this may not be appropriate for your work setting and would have to be approved by your boss). Keep us posted, Casey __________________________ The PC Support Team

I am having a bit of difficulty in developing my exposure plan. My goal is to be able to go back to work two half days per week. I have been off work now for two months because of my panic attacks. The difficulty I have is that the major trigger for my anxiety is when I have to speak with my boss. I think this is because most of my panic attacks took place when I was speaking with my boss in the past because he forced me to talk why I was so stressed out and took more of a disciplinary tone, which made me even more anxious, which lead to a panic attack each time I talked to him for months before I went off. So now I associate the two together. So my difficulty in planning exposure work comes because speaking to my boss is necessary before I can even come back to work at all. When I return to work, I have to meet with my boss quite often so he can monitor how I'm doing and discuss a return to work plan. Unfortunately, this is my level 10 fear level and I'm supposed to start at one!! One thing I have done is started coming in for coffee for 15 minutes with my coworkers, just to get used to coming to work, since I have mild anxiety around just that. Anyone have any ideas??
