CLIENTS EXPERIENCES OF GIVING A GIFT TO THEIR THERAPIST

I have never given a gift to my therapist as was always led to believe that it was not acceptable so have always felt uncomfortable doing so. As a social worker I sometimes receive gifts from clients and it is always looked at as a nice thing but also a something to be wary of. I used to have a therapist who was more open to this and we always used to hug at the end of the sessions. It made it more human and it did not interfere with our counsellor/client relationship!

Members, We invite you to take part in an exciting study looking at clients experiences of giving a gift to their therapist. Your participation will give you a chance to provide your perspective about such experiences and help us understand such events from the clients point of view. You'll also have a chance, when we send you the results, to compare your experiences with those of other clients who participated in the study. This study has been approved by the institutional review boards at the researchers institutions. The study involves 2 telephone interviews, totaling approximately one hour. The first interview will take about 45 minutes to complete. The second interview will be scheduled for approximately 2 weeks after the first and will take about 15 minutes. Participants need to meet the following criteria: - Adult (i.e., at least 18 years of age) - Have had at least 10 sessions of outpatient, individual psychotherapy with one therapist within a six-month period of time. If you have been in therapy with this therapist for more than 10 sessions or for longer than six months, you are welcome to participate in this study, as long as you had at least 10 outpatient, individual sessions with her/him within a six-month period . - Have given a tangible gift to your therapist (something other than a card, note, letter, or holiday item) within the last three years - The gift was given, in person, at any time during, or at the end of, therapy. We would greatly value your contribution to this relatively unexplored area. If you do not meet the criteria listed above, please pass along this announcement to others who may be eligible and interested in participating. Thank you very much.
