What?s your favorite method?

This program is streamlined with all the ideas and more that I have learned over my years of quitting. I used to say I can quit anytime I want but as I got older it got harder.  Tried the patch and had bad dreams.  The gum seemed to make me want to smoke so gave that up.  Have read many books on the subject and presently reading, "Overcoming Addiction,: by Corinne Sweet.  Highly recommend it.
The idea suggested here in "Your Customized Coping Plan," about watching our thoughts is a big motivator.  I've been doing that and started out this morning, not switching on my pc, making coffee and smoking ten cigarettes in a row, but instead got out of here and over to the store for lots of fruit.  One coffee there and two smokes before noon.
Walking to the store I noticed I was thinking of where to go for coffee, where to sit to drink it and smoke, etc.  I'll change that tomorrow by starting with breakfast and thinking lovely, beautiful thought as an aspiring non-smoker.  One step at a time.

Members,

With so many options available today, it can be hard for a new quitter to decide on one. Let’s help them along!

What is your favorite quitting method and why?

Hi Josie, I used the patch. I followed the directions religiously. I read the booklet that came with the patches about a hundred times then read all I could find on the internet about nicotine addiction. Understanding that you are dealing with an addiction is key. Until you understand that and all its ramifications you will not be sucessful in your quiting attempt. To do that I recommend reading , reading and reading some more on the subject. The net has enough information to keep you reading for a lifetime. (a lifetime , btw, that get significantly longer as you read ! )

Great topic Josie.  Before any method is chosen (cold turkey, patch, or medication) it is absolutely necessary that the following steps occur:

1.  Make a solid decision to quit.

2.  Join the SSC and use the dashboard to download the available materials.

3. Have a plan and then have the will and determination to follow the plan.

4.  Use the forums and begin a line of communication with other members; have a quit buddy.

5.  Pick a target date and then begin to slow down on the smoking.  Go from two packs a day to one; go from one pack a day to about one half.  Then when the d day comes you will be better prepared to go to zero.

I would recommend that you have a chat with your doctor and ask for advice on any health issues that may conflict with the various aids that are available.  I personally advocate quitting cold turkey.  Just quit and be done with it.

Simple, yet not easy.   You must remind yourself daily why you have chosen to quit and stick to it.

I've quit smoking twice in my lifetime for significant periods of time. Both times I used the gum, although I tried other methods, such as the patch, Chantix, cold turkey, as well. The gum kept my mouth busy. Unfortunately, I think it may have also caused a small micro-fracture in one of my teeth, too. But still it is worth it to be smoke free.
