First of all congrats on 4 days smoke-free! Second of all, you bring up a great point about the convenience stores. In milestone 4 of the program, there is a section called "When and Where I smoke, & Who I smoke with?". This section of the program deals with understanding specific situations and places that can trigger cravings. Smoking is a habit, and as we know, breaking habits can be tough.
Breaking a habit that you’re addicted to is particularly tough.
Members, how do you ensure that you will not be tempted at places such as convenience stores..etc? How has taking note of the places that trigger cravings helped you with your quit?
I like the hotel and airport comment. That is funny as I also know a couple of airports and where their smoking lounges are. By the way, have you ever been to the Las Vegas Airport? Now even as a smoker I found theirs disgusting. It is in the center of teh airport, completely surrounded by glass walls, so everybody in the area can see you in there, smoking in a room filled with smoke. They make you feel like an animal in a cage. It is kind of funny actually.
Yeah, I am afraid that if I go into a convenience store for anything that I will not make it out without cigarettes. At least I can pay for my gas outside; that helps alot. Driving into work this morning, I was thinking. It is getting easier and more natural for me not to smoke. But then I thought a little bit more, and realized that, although this is true, at the same time it also feels like it would be just as easy to buy a pack and smoke them. What keeps me not smoking is that I know, if I smoke a cigarette, I will feel sick. Everytime that I have tried to quit, when I go back, that first cigarette always makes me dizzy and sick to the stomach. It is an awful feeling. And, smoking is awful. I really hate it, but still want some... addictions... what a pain in da arse :)

Ditto - I had such a ritual and routine with my smoking for many years that it seems really weird - Several times when I was buying groceries or at the convenient stores for gas I almost ask for cigarettes automatically without a second thought!
Each day I'm putting the money for cigs in a container just to see and know how it adds up (it's a motivator for me).
With so many places banning smoking it was getting very inconvenient to smoke other than home. It was hard at first but it's getting easier.

Congratulations on your 5 days of freedom. You are doing great. I, too, had unique arrangements with convenience stores, and will look for other outlets for my 'convenient' needs to stay away from the buffet of tobacco products. I blogged about a time that I was out of fuel, the card readers wouldn't work and I was freaking out. I was in the first couple weeks of my quit and standing in front of any smoke I wanted......THEN IT HIT ME....I had CASH in my wallet in cigarette savings......I threw down the money and bolted.....
Stay focused and Keep the Quit,
Dave

As a traveler, I would memorize which airports had smoking lounges, which ones you could smoke at bars, which ones you had to go outside. I knew which hotel chains allowed smoking, and for those that didn't allow smoking in the rooms, some allowed smoking on the balconies! I knew which restaurants had outdoor smoking patios. I also knew which stores had the best prices on smokes, which ones accepted coupons, etc. Its funny how we know all these details! I'm so glad my mind doesn't have to worry about those crazy things anymore! I bet you feel feel the same way too!

Hi. I don't really have anything to say, but am just perusing the forums for added encouragement and was looking for some support. I am not having major withdrawals this time around (I am at 4 days). I can actually "feel" my lungs, like they are pulsating just a little bit; does anybody else feel this? I of course am thinking of cigarettes alot.
Last night, I was going up to the store and just wanted to go to a convenience store. It is amazing how when you quit smoking, you have pretty much no need for a convenience store. I used to have my 5 stores that I would stop at. I never liked to go to one to often and so had different ones that I would "visit". One I liked in particular because they always had matches available. The others didn't give out matches. One of the stores had better fountain drinks than the others, but the employees made me uncomfortable. And yet another store was good becuase it had a dunkin donuts in it so I would go there when I wanted smokes and a coffee. Non-smokers, I think, don't understand how much smokers really know about convenience stores. I have so many things memorized about different ones. Another one had a super friendly guy working at it, but the smokes were more expensive.... In the movie Clerks, that was all that they sold at the convenience store. Everybody who walked in the store bought a pack of cigarettes. It is amusing, don't you think?
