making things worse

Hi internal I been reading this post and I see you are making the correct connection between thoughts and feelings. The symptoms of anxiety, the feelings, like shortness of breath, dizzy, chest pains, tingle in arms/legs etc. and so on are all related to first fear. When we start adding "what if", what if I have a heart problem? what if I die? what if I pass out? what if I have a blood clot" what if. . . that is second fear. When we add the second fear to the first we feed the panic monster and create the auto response in our body. It triggers the adrenalin to be release and we go into full "fight or flight" response. I think you would get alot of info from the book "Hope and Help For Your Nerves" by Claire Weekes. It has been my main source for anxiety/panic and is helping me recover. We think too much, analyize and the exaggerate the symptoms, all because we fear our own thoughts. Once we can accept that we are creating these symptoms, once we accept that there is nothing wrong with us other than our own thoughts keeping us afraid, then you gain a powerful tool to assist in recovery.

I forgot to add something-do you guys have a fear of some specific illness and think that this time it's real, whereas you can understand that before it wasn't??

Thanks for the replies. You know I have this kind of balance/dizzy issue. I went to my doctor, he thinks I'm fine but ordered an MRI because he knew I wouldn't rest. Anyway that was normal also, but these symptoms persist and actually create the anxiety!!! I feel like if these symptoms weren't here I wouldn't worry.

ABSOLUTELY@! It is always a trigger that sets me off. A sudden jab of pain in the chest, a massive headache...it is those things that set off my panic and anxiety. I keep telling the doctor if they can find the reason for these things I probably would not have panic!

I forgot to answer your other question! ;) As I am learning to challenge my anxious thoughts through the free 12 week program offered here, I have definitely noticed that the more I think about my physical symptoms, like heart beating faster, the worse it seems to be and the longer it seems to last. If I manage to remind myself of this, I start to realize that I'm having the physical symptoms because I'm feeling anxious, which helps me calm dowm and this eventually calms down the physical symptoms as well. Although, sometimes it takes longer than others. Something I'm working on. ;p

Hey Internal! Yes, I really think you're right. My panic always seems to start because I'll be sitting and all of a sudden I'll get really light headed or maybe I'll notice my heart beating faster than usual. The physical symptoms almost always set me off. I would say more often than not, it's the physical that starts the emotions for me.

does anyone wonder if it's the physical feelings/symptoms that cause the anxiety and not the other way around? Also do you think that thinking about the symptoms makes them worse or prolongs them?
