Well I tried the patch and it worked for about 18 months and cold turkey which didn't go well for me but I think I know why, this quit I used Champix/Chantix and I read the Allen Carr Book.  Knowledge is power the more I learned about what this addiction the more I understood what I needed to do to make this work and that I really wanted to quit more then I wanted to smoke.

I do believe that the very first step is to want to quit and after that is to prepare for your quit. Either reading Allen Carr's book or attending seminar or just keeping a smoking dairy where you write down when you have a smoke and what were you doing or why you wanted the cigarette, that opened my eyes and help me see what my tiggers would be and help me devise a plan to overcome those cravings and tiggers.
 
So far this is my favorite quit, I am feeling great about what I am doing, I don't feel the cravings as bad because I DO NOT WANT TO SMOKE  N.O.P.E.  and I am taking it one moment a time.

I tried the gum & Cold Turkey before.
This time Cold turkey chose me + i digested the Allen carr book. I didn't prepare for it & the decision was spur of the moment...... after 20 years of it, i was getting real tired of the smoking thing.

Big difference this time is my Attitude & knowledge especially through the early stages. I studied nicotine addiction relentlessly & learned real quick to hate the addiction with a vengeance.

I won't say it was easy but once i got past those 3 day, 3 week, 3 month stages; the 1 year freshold was a great goal & life changing accomplishment.
 
Fwiw, there is life after smoking.

The laser treatment is like acupuncture, but with lasers. I walked out of there with no cravings at all. I was good for around 3 weeks, then it all hit me, I held on for another week then that was it.

I've done the gum, patches, lozenges, and finally cold turkey. My last 2 quits have been cold turkey and this website, and they have been the most successful. The last one was over 180 days before I, well I didn't slip, I fell and busted my a**. This quit has been much more successful than the last only due to the fact that I was able to move ahead psychologically and take that step from quitter to just a person who doesn't smoke. That step did it for me, I can go 6 or 7 hours without even thinking about it, and that makes it easier to fight a crave when it does come because I'm not exhausted from thinking about it all the time.

I have tried a bunch of methods, but this final quit was cold turkey for me.  Like others have said, I don't think method you chose is what matters most...what really matters is your preparation and attitude.  I think all those other things can be a tremendous aide in a quit, but they can not be the driving force behind a quit.  I think realizing that is the first step to successfully using the various methods out there.  That's been my experience anyhow and seems to be what I hear a lot from people who have quit.

Mindset and mental preparation worked more for me than anything else.  I got mad and tired of feeling and smelling like an ashtray, being unable to breathe without hearing and feeling the 'death rattle'.
 
I did use a herbal product to flush my body of toxins over the first couple weeks. 
 
There is no magic bullet.  Pick one and call it QUITS!!!!!

I'm with you on this one, Tabbyh. Chantix, which I think is the US (maybe American) form of Champix, made me depressed too, and I was still smoking. Also, I've found that no matter which method I've used I've really had to be ready to say good bye to cigarettes. I've had attempts that were almost too easy and attempts that I've had to abandon. What I'm doing now is remembering how many attempts I consciously abandoned--because the withdrawals were not manageble, or the ones I lost because nicodemon made a plain fool out of me--so I'll realize that this quit was not as easy as it seems. Many starts and stops. I'm really planning to make this it. I will die smober. I'll feel out of the woods at about six months, although I'll know that I'll always have to be alert to the demon.

I tried cold turkey, the patch, the gum, Champix none of them worked.  Champix made me really depressed and I wasn't even quit yet... I could not sleep while on the patch (I value my sleep).  I was finding excuses for all of them.  But really it was because I wasn't ready to quit.  I am now using the Thrive Lozenges.... seems to be working...  but I am also determined to quit this time.  I believe that this quit is the last quit... I was ready.  Using NRT alone doesn't help unless you are ready and determined to quit.... my 2 cents...
