alcohol and coping

The first time I had a panic attack I did not realize it was panic. I had been stalked for months and was very scared the first night I was alone at home. I was so scared this feeling could come back I bought a bottle of wine the next day and as soon as the evening had fallen I quickly drunk some glasses to relax. Some months later I was scared to go out and just did it after I had two drinks. My son was only three or four at the time and I felt very ashamed. After some weeks I went to my doctor and asked for some tranquilizers. The regular panic attacks started two or three years later. I never drunk anything while having an attack and stopped drinking during daytime too but continued to drink 5 or 6 glasses of wine every evening. More made have an hangover and made me have panic attacks the day after. I did it for about twenty years and was afraid I would become an alcoholic. (My husband is an addict) Finally about 20 months ago I stopped. A doctor told me alcohol could cause the panic attacks. He wanted me to be recovered to stop drinking but fortunately I could still do it by myself. The attacks did not dissapear and I miss the few hours I felt relaxed sometimes but I do not worry about being or becoming an alcoholic anymore.

I absolutley loved drinking, it made my anxietys disapear, I felt so uninhibited, the opposite of how I feel without alcohol, that is why I loved alcohol so much, it would make me feel less anxious about crossing the street or going on the bus. But recently I was diagnosed with hepatitis c an the doc told me I had to quit alcohol for good. An can not even take my zoloft or any meds, so now I have to deal with my anxiety's an agoraphobia the hard way, I mostly like to stay in. It sucks for now but in the long run alcohol is just hurting us worse, it is not worth it. And pills aren't that great either, it is just more chemicals to depend on. This is something we have to take control of, control our minds or something, I still haven't figured out how to do that.

I did a lot of drinking back in the 80's when I first had panic attacks. I have been fighting this for that long. I took paxil for 3 years and it really helped me and then I went off a year ago and now the panic attacks are coming back. I only stopped the Paxil because of the weight gain. I think I may have to go back on it cause I'm tired of fighting it.

i am a little disappointed that i can not drink anymore even though i have never been an every day drinker or anything - more like a weekend lush. it causes severe anxiety the next day for me as well so i am now the designated driver. not really happy about it, but what can you do? i also try not to take xanax much b/c the next day i am extremely anxious again as well. i think it is best to tough it out. that which doesnt kill you makes you stronger and panic hasnt killed anyone that i know of!

When I first started taking Paxil, I found that alcohol contributed to my anxiety. After I'd been taking it for a while I could drink and be fine that evening but the next day I would be extra panicky. I know that a lot of people turn to alcohol to relieve anxiety and it works. Temporarily at least. Alcohol is a depressent, so it will calm you but it later turns into a stimulant. That would explain why I get panicky the next day. I once had a doctor tell me "Some people drink to relieve anxiety and some people take meds. Pick one." If you have a history of alcoholism in your family I would not recommend drinking to relieve anxiety because chances are you'll fall into the trap of alcoholism. Although, anti-depressents can be just as addictive. My advice would be cognitive therapy and no meds that you MUST take every day. Take a seditive when you ABSOLUTELY NEED TO (because they are extremely habit forming) or take something like Buspirone or a beta blocker if you suspect that you will have an attack that day - they are not supposed to be addictive. If you like the sound of these alternatives, ask your doctor and see what they have to say. P.S - I went off Paxil a long time ago - I don't recommend taking it.

Cali13 I just read your posting from February. If you haven't already quit drinking, I highly recommend as many others have, do it, you will feel much better. I have not drank any alcohol for nine years now. After my first few attacks, I thought it would relax me as all my friends were trying to convince me of that. Once on the meds I think I may have had one glass of wine and decided it was no longer the right thing for me to do. So I am now the official designated driver when a group of us go out. I miss it for the social aspect, but for the physical aspect, I don't miss it at all. Even though I still have mild anxiety on the meds, it's nothing to compare to what I had when I had the alcohol in my system. It's only my opinion. Hope you have found relief. Kathy

hi there for everyone who drinks even once in a way...do you know that alcohol depletes the vitamin b reserves in the body?so whenever you have a drink make sure to have a vitamin b supplement before or at least the next day..especially b12..it does help..i,ve tried it.

try drinking a herbal tea like Chamomile. It helps me relax sometimes when I'm having an attack. But before you do as the pharmacy if its okay to drink with your meds because some herbal substance interfere with the medication

Honestly, I believe that my father's drinking problem started with social phobia. When people would come over to the house he would hide in the bedroom. He died of complications due to alcohol. My brother is now dieing over the same thing. I did not want to become an alcoholic, and I was heading down that path, so I finally got help with medications instead. Yah, I believe many many alcoholics start out with some kinds of phobias or sensitivities or depression, and end up alcoholics...I think it is very very common.

Alcohol and anxiety NEVER mix. Throw in meds and you could have a real problem on your hands. Nix the alcohol pronto. It won't help you and has the potential to create an even bigger problem.
