most difficult part of panic

the worst part for me is fear that i'm having a heart attack and that i'm not going to get help in time- it's a terrible feeling!! mornings are the worst for me- i wake up @ 5:00 to get around for work, and i just wait for it to hit me- usually it doesn't come on until i'm driving to work. i have pulled off the side of the road before contemplating whether or not to call 911. does anyone else feel this way?? also, has anyone ever had sharp chest pains before?? this morning i had some right in the middle between the breasts- i took 4 baby aspirins in fear that it was a heart attack and then they slowly went away. i'd love to hear any feedback!!

Lilly, I have passed out before (not related to Panic Disorder). My Dr explained that the sensation in a panic attack are the fight or flight response...your body GEARING UP to fight or flight whereas passing out is your body SHUTTING DOWN. The two physiological responses are totally opposite of eachother. Chances are YOU WILL NOT actually pass out - you can't if you are in fight or flight. I know it seems darn close. I have been sure the feeling is just like when I actually did pass out but I never actually have passed out DURING a panic attack. I haven't had the chest pains but the passing out/tuning out feelings are all I care to deal with. Hang in there!!!!!

Hi! my worst symptom is the feeling of dizziness and also feeling of unreality this makes me feel that i am going to faint and then either going to go in to a coma forever or dying instantly. When i think of this and imagine myself lying on the ground with no help ahwere there are not many doctors, i get worse and worse and cannot stop thinking of this feeling for the hole time. Lil

Yes, indeed. Very similar to me. I feel this way sometimes I think, "hey, I wonder if I am gonna get worse." But for the last year I have had my ups and downs. I have been of anti-depressants for the 1st time in nearly 20 years and it's been a real tough battle. The fear of losing control goes right along with the spacey feeling and the staring at the walls feeling. I always find that when I get up and do something, my mind awakens and I start to feel better. I have had a lot of old bad feelings return, but a lot of good ones too, since being off meds. Being more awake naturally means that more anxiety will present itself. So I must build on the good feelings. As we all know, it's tough sometimes. My spacey feelings often involve how I prevent my panic or with depersonalization. When these feelings hit I have a few choices. One is valium and I often g that route. I have described valium to my therapist as it being a STOP sign. It just haults everything. Bad side is that it really makes you tired. David

I know just what you mean!!!! I finally told my best friend about this because she is often with me when it happens. At first, I would tell her about it and we would talk about it and yes, it got worse. She started distracting me and it helped so we came up with a code word that if I say it, she knows to go into "distract mode". If I'm alone, I hum out loud to myself...a fun uplifting song. I also drink water (I keep a bottle of water with me EVERYWHERE I go) because your body can't concentrate on too many things at once and the water drinking/swallowing took over my noticing the panic. You have to get your HEAD to ignore your body. The humming things helps a lot.If you understand what's happening, your head is arguing with your body because your body is going into fight or flight but your brain knows there is no reason so it gets into a conflict. Hang in there!!!!!

Hi, I would have to say definitly the spaced out feeling. Its like I could just sit and stare at a wall for hours or something...like my brain just stops functioning...Very Scary! or this weird feeling like electricity going right through my body and getting that feeling when you go over a hill in a car, like full body drop. I can just be lying in bed in the morning and have this sensation for like an hour over and over again...anyone else have this?

I forgot the most difficult thing of my panic attacks. The fear of losing my mind and should I check myself into a facility voluntarily to learn how to manage the attacks. At times I feel as though it is a heart attack instead, because I can't breathe. The last 2 panic attacks I had, I did go to the ER because of that scare. As all of this is going on, it seems to be in Slo-mo. Della

Hi, To me the worst part is everything "zinging" at once. The range of emotions all at once, while trying to inhale. Everything else seems to be in Slow Motion. Della

Easy one for me: Fear of losing control is the worst feeling. Fear of embarrassing myself in a crowd is another. But the losing control is the worst. I have been used to the chest pain or shortness of breath and even the tightness in my head or tingling feeling. But those are warning signs. I would also have to say that OCD is also a nasty feeling. I wish I could find a way to just silence my mind whenever I wanted. I can a lot of times, but as you know, it's not a perfect science to know how to make yourself feel well whenever you want. David

Mine worst feeling is that sinking doom feeling I get in the pit of my stomach that is what kicks starts everything off. If it weren't for that I think I could manage the other symptoms. The constricting feeling in the chest too would be my second. TitaMarie
