Thanks for all the support, everyone. I have just been feeling raw -- like a junkie combing the streets desperate for a fix. It's tough to recognize myself as "that kind" of addict - but I'm as much of a junkie as if I was sticking needles in my arms. Yesterday was a little better - studying with a non-smoking friend. Hopefully today will be even better. I am grateful to be able to come here and find understanding. Hi Lori, Going through each stage or activity of life for the first time without a smoke is usually difficult..your first road trip in a car without a smoke, your first vacation without cigs, your first time sitting in a bar and having a drink without smoking, and the first time studying for finals without nicotine. What everyone has said is very true..the breaks, retaining knowlege, and add to that the knowledge that nicotine is an addictive drug. It is an abusive relationship. It slowly chokes us, makes us sedentary, kills us; and we have the priviledge of paying for them also! Calm down and prepare to study with some gum, suckers, ice water, sunflower seeds, whatever helps you. That all consuming WANT for a cig will pass whether you smoke or not. Do something nice for yourself for getting through that first day of studying without nicotine. Lori, Of course you will be happy again. What Martha and Danielle said. New triggers have to be powered through. Sounds like you were trying to mix it up, that's good. Maybe have something to act as a substitute - a straw, a hollow licorice, a nozzly thingy. And always, sips of water. During one particularly bad episode of unexpected cravings about 100 days into my quit, I found fudgsicles to do the trick - a little reward, ya know? Lori, Did you try studying in smaller breaks? 15-20 minutes, 5 minute rest to do something else. (Chances are you use to do this anyway, you just smoked for those five minutes.) Good on you for getting a change of scenery and pushing through. This is just a new trigger. Keep practicing and studying without smoking will turn into habit. Danielle, Bilingual Support Specialist

Hey Lori! Those happy feelings will come back - it may be AFTER finals but they will. ;) Unfortunately I know exactly what you are going through and am living proof that you can study without nicotine. You can do everything without nicotine, but the first time is the toughest. I've been working on my BA forevah and working full time. When I first quit, I had a hard time studying for long stretches. The thing is - it wasn't the cigarette that helped, it was the 5 minute break. Study for 1/2 hour to an hour and then take a break. Walk around the room, poke in here, go out for some fresh air (real fresh air). Smoking won't make you retain information any better and after those awesome 42 Days it will give you all kinds of other things to worry about. My finals for this semester are in 4 weeks and we lost a week of classes (during midterms) because of the wildfires here in San Diego. My instructors are totally putting the screws to us now! Job-life is going nuts and personal-life is out of control right now too. I say that to let you know that the last thing I'd want right now is a smoke. You'll get here too. After finals are done in a month and the semester ends, you want to be a non-smoker. Hang in there and keep pushing forward. :) You can do it! You made it into law school - you can stay quit! So Thursday I was so happy and contented celebrating my 40 days and skipping around without a care in the world. Isn't life grand....blah, blah, blah. Yesterday the sky went from sunny to black in virtually an instant and I was back at rock bottom. I am a 3rd year law student and yesterday I started the day camping out at a coffee shop for some heavy-duty studying in preparation for finals, which are only 3 weeks away. And it was like I had just quit smoking only a few minutes before. I guess it must be the nerves of finals kicking-in and the knowledge that I've never gone through a finals period before without smoking. Oh God - how am I going do to it? I can't study this much, focus effectively and not smoke - no way. So I spent yesterday in Crazyville. I studied at that coffee shop for a couple of hours and then drove to campus and studied there for a few hours, all the while feeling as if I was going to lose it. When I couldn't stand it at school, I ate a couple of hamburgers and then drove to a different location to try and study. It just wouldn't pass -- it started early in the morning and was still hammering at me when I finally went to bed. Earlier in the semester I had told myself that choosing to quit now might impact my studies and that I was willing to accept that, but the reality is now sinking in and it's knocked me off my feet. So I white-knuckled it yesterday and drove all over town -- but I did not smoke. I couldn't even post about it. Do you ever have those days that are just so bad that you can't even put it down into words? I felt as if I would have literally sold my soul for just one long drag. So I'm still here and it's a little better today. I don't hate everything and everyone today....it's down to a moderate loathing. Hopefully those happy feelings I had will come back.
