help with Paxil

Jeannie, Like so many others who have posted on this site I hate to take meds too but I was willing to do ANYTHING to try to stop my high anxiety level and horrible "go to the emergency room" panic attacks. My Dr started me on 10mgs of paxil a day and I have worked up to 30 mg a day over the past 13 months. I also have xanax in case I have a day that I feel overly anxious. When I started the paxil I felt odd, I was still anxious but after a week the odd feeling went away and I felt the beginnings of normalcy in my life. The last time my Dr upped my dose to 30 mg a day I had no adverse or odd feelings at all. My Dr feels I should take Paxil for at least a couple of years so who knows how the weaning process will feel...I pray its not too bad.

Paxil is not a bad medicaiton if it works for you. I was on it for a while like 8 weeks and it made me more restless so they switched me to Effexor which works really good. I had no problems switching. You'll be just fine. Just trust your doctor!

Hi Jeannie, I have the same problem, I have had a bottle of paxil cr 12.5 mg sitting on my counter for 3 months now. Can't bring myself to take it. Im scared I may get hooked and then be worse when I try to get off it. However a friend of mine was on paxil cr for 6 months and she seemed to get off it fine. She took it for depression but did not have panic. Let me know how it goes taking the med. I know paxil cr is a control release drug so it gets slowley released through out the day rather than a short term thing, but it sounds like you were given the lower dosage of the original.

al, when you came off the drug after 15 days, was it a bad withdrawal? I am obsessing about this, I am starting tonight, and have been staring at the bottle all day long. It really terrifies me. Wish I could live off high doses of Xanax and not worry about that addiction, I would just keep popping those, and belive me I HATE medication. I just worry about getting thru the stuff and then if I can't take it, getting off Thanks Jeannie

Jeannie, I understand your fears. I dislike taking medication of any kind and I have great difficulty convincing myself to swallow pills. Keep in mind (in case the Dr. didn't tell you) that the first week or two on any SSRI can be tough. Your body has to adjust. It's good that your Dr. is starting your dose low because it will make it much easier to adjust to the medication. Also, don't let other people's experiences frighten you----each one of us is different. A lot of people don't follow Dr.s directions about how to come off of meds. and that can cause the awful problems they experience. I take Zoloft and it was a struggle to take it but I wanted desperately to feel better and knew I had to try something. Hang in there and if nothing else share your fears with your Dr. I'm thinking about you. Brenda :)

Thank you for the response, I am just scared of meds, got too...much info off of the net. Bad thing to do. Plus I did talk to her about it, and she was determined I start on this at a low dose, and give it a try. If it were not for the Xanax I would be in the hospital for sure. I hate that my anxiety, the panic, and now the depression has taken over my life. this has got to help ...Thanks

I have found that my own anxiety can get in the middle of medications. You get anxious about taking it! I know that Paxil has worked wonders for many many folks and yes, I do hear the side effects when it is time to withdrawl can be a bummer. Tell her your concern.

Hi, I just came from a much needed Psychiatrist, I waited forever to get into, and she said I was depressed on top of Axiety/Panic. She suggested I take Paxil .5 to start, then 10mg, etc, the problem is I am scared, I have heard it is such a horrible drug to get off of, and I am 54 yrs old, and terrified of more physical side affects. She first sug Celexa, then changed her mind to Paxil, but I am wondering, is Paxil safe, I mean, all those lawsuits, and the short time is stays in your system...should I call and beg for Celexa? My brother takes Celexa and does well....any ideas She also raised my Xanax to 1.5 per day, yuck, I'll be a sombie Jeannie
