I'm one of the oddballs, too. Zoloft put me in the hospital and Effexor worked great, except it put my blood pressure in the basement! Yikes! I have tried 5 anti-depressants in total. I am one of the 1% of people who get all of these crazy side effects from anti-depressants. I've been taking Clonazepam, which seems to be working. I've had to up the dose to 1 mg / day and that keeps a handle on things most days. I also use acupuncture, shiatzu and Reiki. I am on the mend. Slowly but surely. Sarah G :)

I've had acute PD for 6 years now, with precisely 4 reasonably "normal" days. As you might imagine, I have tried countless meds. I read with great surprise the number of people who experience relief with the SSRIs. I've tried the whole lot of them, each for about 4 months after maximum titration, and have experienced only more anxiety and panic while on each one. The only combination that has worked to allow me to be functional (high anxiety, but fewer panic attacks (5-7/month compared to 25+/month without them) are Xanax 0.5mg 4x/day, Neurontin 400mg 4x/day and Buspar 15mg 4x/day. Hope this helps!

I think Sarah is right when she said it depends on the person and the med. For me, I have been on Lexapro for almost three weeks. I have had controllable anxiety for several years, but in August it became uncontrollable for the first time. I think the strong anxiety and panic attacks can seem to come out of nowhere, but at least in my case, I can look back and see the life events that built up one after the other that brought my anxiety to an uncontrollable level. All the while, I felt fine until one day when it started going down hill. Never wanted to be someone who needed meds to feel normal, but once you fully realize that you are not yourself and more importantly not making progress at becoming yourself again, taking the Dr.'s advice to go on Lexapro was easy (for me). Now I feel more like myself than I have for some time, and am confident that it will continue to get even better. Good luck and best wishes.

Hiya Jonathan, Well i'm afraid i'm going to be the odd one out here, because meds never helped me. I took them for a very short time, then took myself off them (granted, this isnt the best thing to do, but something i did all the same). I've been fighting it on my own without any help through meds, and all i can say is it's the hardest thing i have ever done. But i'm not going to give up. I wont lie to u, i get down, i get really bad and my anxiety can shoot through the roof at times, but for me i see my anxiety as an internal battle in my mind. So, i start it, i deal with it. And if i create it, then i can beat it. Brenda, you said that anxiety doesnt happen over night. I have to disagree there, because one day i was fine, "normal".. and the next i suffered my first anxiety attack, which got the ball rolling and i havent been the same person since. Jonathan - I hope you start to feel better soon. As for meds helping or not, i think it depends on the person and the meds. I wont give any a chance because of how i percieve my anxiety. But anything that helps people has to be worth a try right? Sarah xx

I am one of those people who hate taking meds and it is almost a fight with myself to put that pill in my mouth but for a long time I tried to fight my anxiety/panic with nothing and it did not work! I ended up with severe hypertension that the doctor says was brought on by my untreated anxiety. So in the long run I suffered more from not being treated than I possibly would have otherwise. Now I have to take Clonazepam three times a day just to keep from freakaing out at every little pain or unusual feeling I have in my head/body. I also am starting on exeffor and have to wear a patch to control my BP. So I guess if the meds seem to help at all please stay on them because I know for a fact it takes TIME to overcome our anxiety disorders because they did not pop up overnight nor will they disappear overnight..thanks..Brenda bernigirl@hotmail.com

I know that the Lexapro and Xanax helped me a great deal. I weaned myself off of Lexapro (I know...not the best decision) and I notice that although I am not full blown anxious/panic as I was when I started...I am very edgy and have to really try hard to maintain control at times. I do believe that I will start back on the Lexapro at a very low dose and take it from there. I realize how much it did help.

Hi Johnathan, I hope you are doing well. I haven't been here for quite a while. I have been very busy & back to my "normal life". I thank God for Zoloft! I haven't had any problems lately, my refills are up next month & my dr will probably leave it up to me to descide if I'm ready to wean off or take for 6 more months. I am in no hurry to stop taking them, I am feeling so good right now & if one little pill a day can help me then I'm all for it. How are you doing lately?? Chanda
