natural remedies

Exactly. Sometimes we just need the courage to try to go free from meds. It took me many years go gain this courage. Anxiety and panic is weird because just when you think you beat it you feel a tap on your shoulder and it's back for another dance. There have been nights at work where I was so whacked on panic that when I left all I could think of was going to the gym and doing a 30-40 minute cardio workout. Another note on natural rememdies. I have lost 25 pounds since being off prozac. It has a lot to do with extending my workouts, but it also has to do with dropping water weight that comes with prozac. I remember a doctor telling me that prozac would make me lose weight. Big lie or misunderstanding. I went from a 34 waist to a 31. It's amazing because feeling better physically can help better than just about any med. My parents own a health food store near Daytona Beach, so I have all this info at my disposal. David

I have tried, and am currently using 5-HTP. Look it up on google. It's supposed to raise seretonin levels and also help with depression and anxiety. I have to say it works because it helped me gain the confidence to get off prozac for good. I have been off prozac since July 2003. I also have tried valerian. It's similar to valium, just that it's natural and stinks. LOL. It smells like sweaty socks, but it really works. In fact, I sometimes scale down on it so I do not become immune to it. I then use it again and it works again. I have been on triavil since 1993, the same time I went on prozac. This was for panic, anxiety, depression and OCD. I have been doing rather well on natural suppliments and am off triavil, which I weened off over 6 months. It was only 4/25 anyway, but the psychological aspect, as you know, can be had to overcome. I find the best natural method is extreme physical exercise and laughter. The Simpsons and Seinfeld help with that. So, I am off all meds, except for the occasional valium while at work, but so far I am doing well off of triavil except for some returned panic the last 3 weeks (2 notable, but mild panic attacks). But I attribute a lot of this anxiety and panic to the names Charley and Frances. Yes, I live in Florida. Charley was not too bad, blew through pretty fast, and caused some great damage, but Frances overstayed her welcome and really played havoc with my mental state. I have an appointment with my therapist tomorrow for some fine tuning. I also recommend Omega 3 fish oil. It can help stabalize your mood. David

JM, What you say could be true. I think it's a choice each person has to make for himself based on the information we currently have. Nothing is a guarantee. I have a general fear of taking any kind of pill---prescription or otherwise. So taking SSRI's was a researched and difficult choice. What works for some is dangerous for others---there's no one answer and no 100% side effect free way of going. Doesn't make it easy on those of us panicking all ready does it?lol

Ive always find the alternate therapies very suspect and usually the vitamins, etc dont agree with me...I rather take meds...in the end, whether its a vitamin or a med, its kind of the same thing...you need to take something to get better.....the suicide studies are very sad for the parents that lost children but the majority of kids do well on these drugs and potentially many more suicides are prevented.....i think the big ahha is that the drug companies need to give parents warnings.....what a nightmare

JM, As a teacher of high school Behavior Disorder students---I see teens all the time who are on these meds. I watch my students closely and I know parents have shared with me that their children's Dr.'s have suggested they closely monitor their kids. It is a great concern and I'm sure there are numerous cases of problems or we wouldn't be hearing about possible new FDA labels etc.... I too have concerns for adults taking SSRI's though no link has been publicly identified for this group. My own experience has been that the SSRI helped stop the panic when nothing----I mean nothing---else worked. When I came off of the meds. I had a tough time of it. A lot of unpleasant side effects for about two weeks after the final dose. However, the support it provided was worth the difficulties. Now that my panic has resurfaced I chose to go back on the same med. At least I know what I'm dealing with. Even so, my husband is very conscious of my moods and pays attention to any change in behavior. So far so good. Sometimes we have to make those hard choices and take a chance.

Hi JM, Thanks for the info. on Kava. I ultimately opted to go on an SSRI. I chose the "devil I knew vs. the one I didn't".

My Dr. informed me last week that Kava is out and is not a good choice because there have been some very serious medical problems related to it. I dislike taking medication and was exploring natural alternatives with my physician when he mentioned this.
