Chinese Herbal Medicines

Susan, I don't think you are supposed to stop and start anything too quickly. My experience was that since I thought that the Chinese medicine would take a while to work for the depression, I kept taking Effexor XR for about two months while also taking the Chinese medicine. I was very very happy, and probably the happiest I've been for a long time; however, later on I learned I was not supposed to be taking both at the same time. Well, I think the Chinese medicine helps you sleep well, and when you stopped it, it probably had an effect. Chinese medicine has to be taken every day at specified times to work; the effects of it wear off quickly, it does not stay in your body like drugs do, so one day off will make a big difference especially if you are just starting. I had two weeks of withdrawal sickness from the Effexor XR -nausea vomiting shakes, etc. I stayed in bed for two weeks. But having said that, when I stopped all the Chinese medicine, I was fine, no withdrawal symptoms until three months later; so maybe they do build up in your body after time; but three or four months after I stopped I was a crying mess again, and had to go back onto it. Deep depression and anxiety. So I started again, but then about nine months later I stopped again, and went back to traditional medicine because my panic was not going away. I went to two different doctors after that because we moved in between, and tried about six different medicines, until now I am taking a mixture of meds., this doctor is prescribing a herbal dried medicine to be taken with hot water 1/2 hr before meals like Chinese medicine, and then other drugs morning and night. Then later another drug for sleeping. So that's where I am now. Hope you will really improve on the Chinese medicine; for some people it is a really good alternative to the drugs, and I recommend it highly, especially if you can get some kind of other treatments with it. All the best...

Thank you for your comments Redface. I know what you mean about the bother of boiling up the herbs because I've only been doing it for 4 days and its driving me mad....the taste is awful too. I'm on a very low dose of Prozac ie 10mg which is dealing with the rebound anxiety and depression that I experienced after withdrawing from Celexa. I'm hoping that the Chinese medicine will let me keep at a low dose or withdraw altogether. At the moment it certainly seems to be dealing with some of the side effects of first taking Prozac....insomnia for example...as soon as I started the herbs routine, I have kept falling asleep all over the place with that lovely relaxed sleep feeling. If I woke up early as I was doing, I was able to just turn over and fall asleep again which I haven't done in years. Do you think thats the Chinese Herbs? Yesterday I didn't take any of the concoction due to personal reasons and didn't think anything of it. However, I had the most awful night and today I am having really bad anxiety again which I think is from the Prozac dose being raised slightly.

I have tried Chinese medicine, and it does work; but it is not as strong as the drugs and takes longer to work. Their philosophy is that anxiety and depression are physically caused by an imbalance in the body which needs to be re-balanced. When I was taking it, and it is a real pain to take it for three years or more, because you have to boil the stuff correctly etc. and take it with you on vacation etc.; but it had a lot less side effects for the first while. The problem may come when you catch a cold or flu or something, then they may take you off the other medicines to treat the cold etc. instead. If you are not living a stressful life, or having any bad things happening to you or you are not in a critical condition, I believe Chinese medicine is probably the best thing to do. But you will have to see for yourself. I eventually stopped taking it, because my anxiety increased and I was not strong enough to cope with what was happening, so I went back to the traditional doctor. But in your case, you will also be doing acupuncture and perhaps your doctor will be better than mine was, more thorough, etc., and I hope all the best for you. It may be a great alternative!

Has anybody tried Chinese Herbal Remedies for panic and agoraphobia? I consulted a Chinese Doctor today who has prescribed many herbs for me to boil and drink. I also have an acupuncture session booked for next week. He seems very optimistic about my outlook and I am hopeful. I have been on Celexa for 5 years and weaned myself off over a 9 month period. However, after a couple of months I had horrendous rebound anxiety like I had never experienced before and also started getting bad depression which I hadn't actually suffered from in the first place. My doctor has put me on a very low dose of Prozac which has helped with some of the side effects of withdrawing but I really am not getting on with the drug. It is making me feel very agitated and restless and I now have terrible insomnia. I'm really frustrated with it all in fact because now I don't know what i'm suffering from anymore, is it the withdrawal symptoms or is it rebound anxiety/depression or side effects of the Prozac. I'm hopeful that the Chinese medicine will balance me out and would love to hear about other peoples experiences with it.
