Meds and Options?

Thank you. My concern with medication is the instability in my life right now. If I lose my job I lose my ability to obtain the medication as well as my access to doctors. On the other hand, these PAs have to stop! I will talk to my doctor and therapist.

I guess the thing is that we are all different and respond to different drugs differently. Therefore there isnt a single solution that is great for everyone, even though we might all have the same disorder. Some people prefer benzos or other pills they can take in response to an attack of anxiety or panic (whether that be several times a day, a couple of times or week, or even less frequently), other people prefer an ongoing, once a day or even once a week solution that keeps them in the same state of mind, more preventative rather than reactive. Unfortunately the only way to learn about this is to try things, upon a dr's advice of course. Dr's are more keen on, and more likely to prescribe SSRIs now a days as you dont build tolerance to them. Some people have reported bad reactions to SSRI anti-depressants, but generally the incidence of bad experiences is very low - about 1 in 10,000. With benzos, the more addictive properties (especially tolerance) has meant that some people (only some) tend to abuse them (willingly or unwillingly) and this has led to long term addiction, law suits, and all kinds of health problems. Many people in the medical field believe that panic tends to be a consequence or reaction to anxiety, and anxiety is inter-related with depression, hence anti-depressants can be a very effective treatment. As you start to feel better consistently on the anti-depressants, your anxiety reduces, you are less down and out and thus less anxious, and you stop panicking. In terms of brain chemistry they argue that despressed and anxious people tend to find it difficult to retain serotonin, and the drugs restore this chemical balance. Many people, including myself, have found or are finding this to work really well, at minimal cost. My SSRI, luvox, took about 4 weeks to become fully effective, and its helped me to feel consistently good. I seem to draw from my own positivity and this has resulted in a lot less anxiety - i havent had a panic attack for almost 2 weeks now which has been great. I had a couple of minor side effects at first - occasional migraines, dry mouth and very thirsty, feeling edgy and a little "high", but these feelings do wear off, at least they

Thank you for your information. I am looking for questions to ask my doctor. I have been trying to learn something about the medications that are out there. I have a feeling all I have accomplished is to alarm myself. I'd like to know something about the quantum of appearance for the various side effects.

You should probably ask your doctor what would be best under your circumstance. I take Adivan when needed and that really helps my anxiety and/or panic attacks. It can be addictive but only if you take it on a regular basis which I do not. Well, that's not entirely true. When I first started having panic attacks three months ago I wold take it quite frequently but as of today I only take it once or twice a week when the anxiety gets bad. It usually takes the edge off and breaks the cycle for a few days. Hope this helps a bit and good luck with your job. I hope it all works out for you !!!! :)

I know I said I was going away, but I am not 100% rational these days. Maybe 5% some days. I'll leave to you to assign the number for then and now. Persistance pays it seems. Finally, I have found a doctor that did not just write me off as a malingering old fool and I found a counsellor with good recommendations from other professionals in her field that will accept me as a client. Those two factors where such a relief that for 2 days I was anxiety free. It felt wonderful. So peaceful. I had forgotten what that could feel like. She also told me I am not defective. In the past couple of years I have been through and am still going through a number of major stressor events that could easily trip someone up and once the anxiety feed back loop is established it can become very difficult for an individual to break the loop without help. To help break the loop and obtain more immediate relief she is recommending I secure a prescription for a psychotropic medication. Here is the rub. My job is at risk. The company is reevaluating the project to which I am attached, all of my efforts to transfer to another project have failed. I am at very real risk of layoff. If that happens my insurance coverage ceases. A number of family problems have decimated my emergency savings. That could easily leave me with no access to either the drug or medical supervision during the withdrawal phase. From what I have read about these drugs, cold turkey is not an experience you want to volunteer for. I would really like to recover the feeling of peace and competency. I would like to be the way I was before I fell in to this pit. On the other hand, I can not imagine surviving 2 to 4 weeks of terror greater than that which I have been living through these last few months. I can not imagine how I could function. Is there a drug that will not dope me down to a non-functional state (I have to stay sharp and ready to respond) yet does not have rebound on withdrawal as a risk? Is there an backup program that would help me if I was thrown to the wolves? I live in California. Are there other options? I have been given Ambien for sleep. After several months without sleep to be able to actually sleep is very nice. I have to fight the temptation to just tak
