You guys are so awesome!! I feel so humbled by everyone here :gasp: I mean even though feeling so vulnerable causes misery, at least it is humbling, I think. Maybe that's the good part of anxiety ;) Realizing that there is such a fine line between confidence and weakness. Realizing that we may all have the power within us to be that positive, confident person at any given time, just as easily as it is to become that helpless, tormented person, that seems to choose US, rather than us choosing them. It's as if it's a THIRD PERSON, THAT WE loathe, yet pity, and want so desperately to rid ourselves of. How envious we are of those who don't think twice about hopping on a freeway in heavy traffic and driving for hours. I doubt I will ever be that person. But maybe it's enough for ME, as long as I can do the things I need to do...and that is to get myself to and from work, to the store, appts, etc. And you're right dCheryl, it does indeed set the tone for the entire day....it can't help but influence it. Whereas yesterday, I let the day beat me up..today, I think I can, at least, raise my fists. So I will take your suggestions (shannon too) about the driving over the weekend. My only worry is that it's supposed to be rainy and that is sort of freaking me out a bit. I've always been much more cautious in rain, and so I don't know if I am setting myself up for failure...or if I should endeavor to just ignore the rain? Maybe I am looking for a way out? :confuse:

Great Job kitcat! Sounds like you had a wonderful commute. Kind of sets the tone for the whole day doesn't it? Go driving with b/f this weekend. Don't think of him as a crutch. Think of it as getting one step closer to facing your fears. He'll be with you, you'll be safe and knowing he can take over (or take you home) should help ease the anxiety. If you don't feel like you can go a long distance, at least go a few miles and give it a try. NOTHING BAD WILL HAPPEN TO YOU! Hi DPW. Don't believe I've talked to you before. If you have a 7pm appt the traffic will most definelty be lighter. Seeing how its after normal working hours, perhaps like Susanne said, you can find someone to ride with you. At least it will give you some comfort knowing someone is with you. I have a 3:00 apt today and its across town. I have a friend picking me up to take me. I still drive to and from work and I'm feeling alot better about it most days, but just to ease my mind I decided to not go it alone. If all goes well, then next week I'll take myself. Good luck and let us know how it goes. Cheryl

Kitcat, Yeah!!!! You did turn a corner, be so proud of yourself!! Just imagine how much easier tommorow will be. I think you should take your b/f up on his offer. He must really care about you and it's your time to show off a little. You enjoy spending time with him and you can practice a little at the same time. You know he will not be your crutch right? So go for it! Have a great day, I'm proud of you!!! S

Well I must admit that today, I had the most amazing drive to work ;) Dont know what made the difference!! It was a bit lighter out....and light traffic...I brought water, instead of coffee, and my clicker, which I barely used at all....I actually enjoyed the sunrise, and my music...a SUDDEN, ALMOST calm came over me. It was unbelievable. Felt just as anxious before leaving the house but kept telling myself I was going to go at my own pace and not let anyone push me to go faster. I could feel my whole body relaxing and even my eyes relaxing (like they always used to do)so that focussing seemed normal and not strained. One thing I was thinking about this morning. I remembered when I quit smoking and how hard the cravings were at first and I remember praying...NOT to stop the pain of the carving, just to get through it. Can't say if I have turned a corner...of course I'd like to think I have. But I feel more encouraged this morning than I have in days. My b/f wants to take me out driving this weekend. I have mixed feelings, because I think I could easily use him as a crutch, and that I need to do it on my own...what does anyone think? Thanks kitcat

DPW, My advice is to leave yourself plenty of time to get there, give yourself permission to pull over several times, take deep breaths, count to 1000, pick a word and see how many words you can rhyme with it, tree, fee,me,see. Talk to yourself, say your grocery list outloud. Get your mind on something else. When the feelings enter your mind, thank them for comming and ask them to leave. This is what works for me, I hope it works for you, let us know how you did.

Driving! What ever happen to the horse and buggy days, wouldn't it be so much easier? The driving thing is really starting to touture me today. I am treading going to my 7pm doctors appointment. Will it be better after rush hour? Will I get stuck at that dreaded 2 second light? Will I chicken out and cancel? I am so sick of these thoughts, yet I can't seem to stop them. I am almost ready to offer to buy my therpaist dinner if she'll go with me. Any tips would be greatly apprciated.

Shannon That IS FUNNY! I was thinking today, how many other drivers might be experiencing what I was...I thought, NONE, most likely. Ride home was tolerable. I do seem to struggle more in the mornings. Today on my way home I found that alternating between putting my sunglasses on, then taking them off, was, well amusing....and seemed to help me focus more. LOL...as if focus is really the problem..more like trying to take some of the intensity away, by focussing LESS. Thanks for your support! I don't know how you do it, though...I could never be a sales rep who had to travel...and knew even years ago, I could never have a job in transportation. I've never enjoyed driving, ever, but then I've never freaked about it, like this, before, either.

Kitcat, I had a terrible driving phobia after my first attack. And guess what, I'm a sales rep! My office is my car. I have to drive 25,000 business miles a year. It's funny you mention the "clicking", I always have pens in my car and when I feel it comming on I pick up my pen and click away. Sometimes I even click to the music on the radio. I'm a one man band! I think the more you do it the eaiser it will get. Next time you feel it comming on picture me in the car next to you clicking my pen and singing, You will have to laugh!!! Shannon
