Dear redface, It is indeed a reaction of the ANS. It happens to all skin types, just quite a bit more obvious in those fair skinned... Susanne

I too am fair skinned, and wondered what it would be like if I had a different colour skin. I believe I have social phobia also, and this week I was sitting next to a couple in a restaurant. I just asked the lady sitting next to me what a certain dish was, and then, after her husband started talking to me about it, I suddenly had a panic attack and turned beet red. Then I really felt foolish, and we shortly thereafter left the restaurant. I was so releaved we were leaving. I have never seen this person before and will probably never see him again, but that is how I sometimes react especially sometimes when men speak to me. It is so embarrassing and I feel so childish, and I am a middle aged woman. What is wrong with me? I guess it's just my autonomic nervous system feeling threatened in someway....

I have social anxiety disorder with panic attacks and generalized anxiety disorder and my face goes beat red when i feel panicky. I get panicky for useless reasons, like if someone is talking to me or someone is looking at me. I have red hair and fair skin so I really go red because my skin is more see-through than most people's. Basically i can relate and i wish there was a simple cure....i have tried meds but nothing has worked long term. Hope you didn't get food poisoning. I did sound like you were afraid of taco bell :) Take Care Allison xoxo

Thanks again redface- Its nice to know that you get that pain too sometimes. Because that really scares me when I feel it. I worry that I have heart failure all the time. I am feeling very anxious today about things even though I went my counselor today. She thought I had made really good progress from last week and I guess it freaked me out. I have been worried all day that I am going to die. My pupils have been so pinpointed today and I dont know if panic and anxiety cause this or maybe I have something to worry about. I guess I just feel so uncomfortable when I dont feel as panicky now that it scares me. Do you ever feel like this anyone? I have just had such a icky feeling all day long, you know like an impending doom feeling, I feel every little sensation in my body. My shoulder on the left side hurts and that scares me too. I managed to take care of things but not without feeling horrible the whole day. I just feel like I want to run out the door and scream or something.

Ocassionally I too get that pain under my left rib cage, and heart attacks do run in my family. My grandmother and all her siblings had them, so did my father, and my brother. I am at high risk for them also. But I just try to think when it comes on that it is probably either indigestion; which can also give you pain; or I am too anxious. Try to relax when it comes on...if you can. If I can relax or try some indigestion medicine, it goes away. Since being on medications, this kind of pain and panic is very rare now. When I was totally stressed out in my younger days, I had it more often, and I thought I was going to die too. I had my heart checked out at the doctor. If you have any concerns, checking with a doctor can often get rid of your anxiety about it happening. Most likely they will re-assure you that there is nothing wrong. It is better than worrying about it.

Thank you trish and redface, that helps me to know that I am not the only one with this problem and that it is too all part of the anxiety. I already have sweaty palms today and I am very worried that I have damaged my heart and I am having heart failure now and I think I have very obsessive thoughts all day long about this. I read this article last week in my glamour mag about a women who at 29 had to have open heart surgery because she had heart failure and now I have been obsessing over the fact that I am almost 28 and I have this weird pain right below my left rib cage and it seems to cause indigestion but it only seems to feel like this when I start thinking about it. I have been having this symptom only since November when we had to rush home because my fiances dad a heart attack and had to have open heart surgery. Anyway this is so frustrating and I hope that all of us can find a way to beat it.... Thanks again for the support it means a lot to me and really helps me get through the days. I hope I can do the same for all of you too. Jmodge

Yes, I get beet red when I panic, also I sometimes have profuse facial sweating without the flushing, which I believe is my autonomic nervous system going into action. I have suffered with this since I was about 12 years old, and just going into puberty. I wanted to die because of it during my teenage years. As I married young, I would often feel guilty if it happened around other men. Sometimes it happened around women too. I just tried to go on with my life as best as I could, but with depression. Finally, when I was around 35, I went for psychiatric help, and was diagnosed with Major Depression and Anxiety with Agoraphobia. I believe I also have serious obessive thought problems from time to time. I considered having an operation where they cut the nerve path in your chest area, to stop the flushing and sweating, or laser treatment of the face, to stop the flushing; but after checking it out, the risks and the cost, I haven't tried that yet. I still believe I can beat this thing some how, other than with radical surgery. One reason is; if I am able to wear very thick makeup; (and I'm not to sweaty); then I have much more confidence in the panic situation. I remember that no one can see the flushing if I am protected in this way, and then the panic subsides. So I know it is a combination of my weak nervous system and wrong thinking about my situation. Now , I just have to go a step further in my therapy, and find out how to control it more with my mind. Others have been able to cope better with this symptom, so I hope we will too.

Yes Jmodge I do, the flushing seems heat radiates from my face and neck, sometimes my skin feels its crawling or itchy. Though since its regular with my attacks I pretty much know that is a symptom of my attacks and nothing more. Most people's panic kinda follow the same symptoms, short of breath, rapid heartbeat, etc., etc. If you have already had it checked out, and it normal with anxiety, I doubt its anything. Usually you get used to those and know its anxiety, just have new of out the ordinary symptoms checked if your panic starts off differently. Trish

I had to laugh when I read my post because I made it sound like I am generally afraid of Taco Bell but what I meant is that I just ate that today and I am afraid that it was bad!!! LOL
