Are you on meds?

Jaide, I have taken Paxil, Klonopin, Lexapro, Xanax, and Zoloft. The only ones that didn't cause bad side effects for me were zoloft and xanax (DON'T LET THIS DISCOURAGE YOU - EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT AND ANY ONE OF THESE DRUGS MAY BE PERFECT FOR YOU). I have heard from several people that Paxil kicks in pretty quickly. Zoloft has a side effect of anxiety (which sounds crazy, I know, to prescribe it for anxiety disorders). I experienced anxiety day and night the 1st 2 1/2 weeks on it. I rode it out and took xanax as needed to get me through the bad days. After the initial 2 1/2 weeks, I had no side effects and the anxiety/panic was gone and I didn't need xanax anymore. As to your question about whether or not you need medication to get better............this is how it was explained to me by my Dr............If you have a chemical imbalance, then you need medication. If you have something mentally troubling you that is causing the panic, then therapy by itself or with medication will work. Does that make sense?? I don't know how you determine if you have a chemical imbalance though. I went through counseling and they couldn't find anything significant in my present or past so I guess that is how they determined it was chemical related. As I've said in other posts, don't wait too long to get help for panic attacks. The longer you wait could possibly mean a longer recovery time. Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Hi Jaide, I have been on practically everything out there (have been struggling with PD for 17 years). I agree with the other person who said that it is a personal choice. Everyone is different although one pattern which seems to repeat itself with almost everyone who suffers from panic is that we tend to be more sensitive to medicines and their side effect, FYI. Currently what is working best for me is Xanax XR which is an extended version of Xanax. It lasts for 17 hours roughly so I take it in the am, I don't get that wasted feeling that Xanax gives me and I also take 10 mg of Lexapro. Hope this helps.

Jaide - I agree with susanne. People can work through this without meds - I'm just too chicken for that! The meds help, and, say, a xanax can be a quick fix in the midst of a panic attack, but the meds alone won't fix the problem (of course, assuming one's panic attacks aren't from a medical disorder).

Hello Jaide, Yes, it is possible. Medication is just one option for treatment of panic/anxiety. Susanne

Well you aren't alone. You don't know how many times I wished for that "magic pill." I'd probably kill for it!! lol

LOL,you're right dCheryl,if there were a magic pill,we wouldn't waste our time here, except to ask "where's the magic stuff at,where do i get it?" :p I guess i am just being impatient....i am not having a very good day, have a bit of anxiety, and i get upset because of it and wish there were an instant solution.

Yes people can overcome panic disorder without meds. I know several people who have. As for an istant cure/magic pill, there is no such thing. If there was none of would be in here. The way it was explained to me was this: It took time to develop these fears and phobias and along the way we have conditioned ourselves to react to them in a certain way.....it is also going to take time to unlearn these behaviors and put ourselves on the road to recovery.

p.s.---nobody answered my question about whether people can overcome panic without meds.

I guess what i am interested in is if meds are an instant cure once they kick in,or do those of you on meds still have panic attacks? It just seems like it would be so much easier to find some kind of "magic" pill that takes it all away rather than to have to deal with it. I have 2 prescriptions, one is lexapro and the other is effexor.I had such a bad experience taking one dose of the lexapro that i never took anymore and am too afraid to even try the other one.I've read where they both make anxiety worse,so what's the point anyway?

Hey Serranian, how did you determine that the Paxil isn't working for you? I often wonder if we aren't just getting better on our own when taking meds because we "think" there are helping....or are we getting better because the meds are doing their job.
