fighting the cravings...

for 18 år siden 0 5 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi everyone...hope you all are in good spirits! I am half-way through day 2 and the cravings are bothering me. I feel like I don't know what to do with myself. I would smoke in between activities, on the phone, etc. I am avoiding phone calls (trigger) and trying to get some motivation. I feel so lost, I don't know what to do with myself. I have almost lost a sense of who I am. I am happy about the quit but for some reason I am in a depressed state/ confusion on what to do. (I am a stay at home mom, child is in school during the day.) I have no desire to do ANYTHING! Please help!!! I know exactly what you mean. You feel like you're going around in circles. Every part of your life has been associated with smoking, so when you stop it's like losing your best friend. The one you watched tv with, the one you talked on the phone with, etc. Believe me, smoking is not your friend, it's your enemy. We are your friends now and you can do it. Try and think of something you always wanted to do but didn't find the time to do. Maybe that will help you get motivated. It will get easier. Good luck My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 3 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 72 Amount Saved: $19.5 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 11 Mins: 10 Seconds: 19

Stephness: You feel like you've lost a sense of who you are for good reason. You were a smoker and your entire identity was tied to the filthy, disgusting cigarette. It is SO very important that you do not dwell on what you think you're missing out on. There is virtually NOTHING positive about smoking. Stay focused on all that you're GAINING. I know it sounds much easier than it is, but remind yourself that you're feeling so awful right now because you're addicted to nicotine and the junkie in you is talking up a storm. Do NOT listen to the junkie. Listen to the person you WANT to be -- the person who is going to wrench control from the nicodemon. Regaining control over yourself feels SO GOOD! You deserve that. Hang tough and stay close here. Keep the faith. Stephness, first off, this is very normal. My question for you is what kind of coping mechanisms do you have in place to deal with the craves, boredom and trigger's. You have to replace the cigerette's with something else. I used hot tea, and boy did I drink a ton of it the first few weeks. Anytime I was bored or craving a cig, I would set the tea kettle on the stove to boil, pick out a favorite flavor of tea and wait until it was ready...sometimes stalking the tea pot until it was done. Other ideas are sugar-less candy, gum, a hot shower or bath...brush your teeth, go for a walk...anything to distract yourself from the crave and/or trigger. The sky is the limit and you can be creative...just don't smoke. Your training yourself to do something different in place of the smoke. This takes time and repitition. The more you replace the cigs with something else...the easier it will be in the days to come. Post and let us know how your doing! It's smart to hunker down through the quits and do whatever you have to do, including nothing in an effort to avoid triggers during this raw time. It's also normal to be depressed. You're saying goodbye to your old habit and haven't yet replaced it. You will when you are strong enough. Right now kick in your coping mechanisms - walk, take a bath, keep busy, read and post to this site. Confusion is also normal. Just pamper yourself right now. Try not to take on anything that you don't have to, take safety issues into consideration. You are busy quitting - it takes focus. P.S. you are loosing who you were - the smoker part. Keep close. Stephness, What you are going through and feeling is perfectly normal. Amazing how often we used cigs to "fill-up" all those little times during the day, isn't it? You feel lost because you are altering a routine you've grown accustomed to and are attempting it without a crutch you've grown to lean on. You need to fill your schedule and your life with (positive) replacements for both. Take a walk, clean the house, wash your hair, the car or the dog. Keep busy, or take a nap. It really doesn't matter what you choose, and it may take some time to figure out which activities work best for you. You're off to a great start, Stephness. Keep the faith and come here to read and post when you're tempted. We're all in this together. I found myself sleeping a lot at first...but sometimes that makes you more down... Try reading an interesting novel, give yourself a manicure/pedicure, drink lots of water, eat some sunflower seeds, crossword puzzles or word searches are fun, a jigsaw puzzle, clean out a closet, try a new recipe, dye your hair an interesting color, join a gym and meet other moms, go to a movie, window shop..... Hi stephness - The very best advice I have is spend as much time here as possible, reading - especially old posts... Those who went before you have shared their good and tough times, their coping skills and what kept them quit. Stay close to this site and spend every extra moment right now reading. Make sure to drink plenty of water, get plenty of good rest (find ways to relax and clear the mind) be kind and gentle w/yourself (you are healing in many ways). And just hold on tight...
