Underactive thyroid mimics panic disorder? I didn't know that! I have Hashimotos Thyroiditis and Hypothyroidism. I have been treated for panic and anxiety, agoraphobia, depression for about seven years; and the last two years, for the thyroid problems. Even if I take the thyroid medication I will still have panic. So now I am taking meds again for anxiety/depression as well. I would like to know more about this!
Blondie,
Aside from family history of anything major, diabetes, heart problems, etc. I was given a blood test also, this is mainly to rule out an overactive or underactive thyroid, which mimics panic disorder. Some time later, can't remember when, he also did a 24 hour urinary output collection. When all the above came back negative, the diagnosis was complete with panic disorder, after my repeated attacks, etc.

They will probably just talk to you about your medical history and determine if you need further testing. My Dr. had me hyperventilate on purpose and see if those were they same sensations I was getting when I had an anxiety attack. It worked!! That is exactly what I was experiencing. Good luck to you - hope you can get your anxiety under control quickly! ;p
When you first go to the doctor for anxiety what kinds of tests do they do? I was just wondering cause i have an appt on Thursday. I am kinda scared cause i hate the doctor! Well hope you can help! :p Thanks a bunch! ~Krista
