Dear Monica,
I can identify with the feelings you're describing. For 30 years I smoked, and I realize that all those years I had been "sucking it up!" whenever I had anger, sadness, or any of the more negative emotions. So, now when I get overwhelmed with the panic you're describing, I (am not kidding) scream as loud as I can into a pillow. Scream and scream it out!!! until I feel some calm. Try to let family and pets know you're not losing your sanity, but that you're blowing off steam. Also, I have been lucky to be able to cry it out when it comes up. I have a job where I work with another women who understands. I get waves of feelings and I cry it out and it passes. The feelings do pass. I think they need to come up and be let out. I cannot believe the amount of crying I've been doing these past few months. Big, giant tear-drops! A friend of mine who quit smoking 3 years ago described it as "thawing".
It helps me to talk to other women. None of the men I know who have quit smoking in the past can identify at all with this crying stuff, and talking to them makes me feel like I am losing my mind.
My quit date was September 7 of this year. I'll have 90 days smoke-free on December 7!
We can do this, girl! And don't we smell great?
Peace out!
