Not Doing so Good

I'm probably way too new to be of any value, but my experience (after quitting many, many times) is that if the core of your being isn't ready, it isn't ready. I'd find those 25 reasons to quit on these boards, let them speak to your heart, and see if they resonate. When it's time, your heart will lead your brain and nervous system, and it won't be so bad. I'm behind you 100%. peteg My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/30/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 4 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 217 Amount Saved: $22 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 18 Mins: 18 Seconds: 18

Tennielle, Sorry I'm late to this party! But you have made it through day 1!!! Isn't that exciting? I'm so happy for you deciding on freedom! Now, keep doing what you know works. I too am on the patch, and the last time I did not "make it" I was playing mind games with the patch. I'd cut it, I'd forget it, I'd put it on one day and not the next, and guess what? It didn't work. Well, some one put a dunce cap on me, cuz if you don't follow directions, you don't get the results. So... several years later, here I am, following directions to the letter, and if I can do 19 days, honey, you surely can too. So take our hands and let's kick some ash! Lots of wonderful ideas here, take what you like and leave the rest. I can't remember the movie, but Robin Williams said to someone (god, isn't memory loss great) "You either smoke...or you don't smoke..make up your mind". Or something to that effect. That's me..now..the 'don't" thing. That seems to work for me. Hi Tenn I think that I'm a little late posting too. I think that sometimes the fear of quitting (or probably the fear of failure) is the worst part. We know that week 1 and week 2 will be awful...but we've gotten through awful before. I did not think that there was any possible way that I could cope with life without smoking. I KNEW that I was going to fail....but somehow I found this site after quitting on a whim....and somehow the people here helped me to gather the strength I needed to get through each day, they helped me to gather the tools I needed and inspired me to believe that I could do it and that life would be so much better. I've been using the patch but have also been doing some reading which has helped me to reevaluate why I have thought that I needed cigarettes so much. I wish I could recommend the name of the book because I know that it has helped me to work on my "thinking" In short, smoking makes us an addicted. When we are addicted, we feel better every time we smoke (because it relieves withdrawal). Eventually, we begin to believe that smoking relieves stress (when it really only relieves withdrawal and causes more anxiety/stress), we think it makes us more confident (but again - we only feel better because we have "fed" our addiction). In short - smoking is given some magical qualities that it doesn't deserve when all it really does is feed our addiction and ensure that we will continue to go into withdrawal again and again. Anyway...I'm rambling basically because this book has helped me to see smoking in a different way. Jump in, quit the habit, use NRT's if you need, get all the advice you need from the Moderator's and Members here...educate yourself, take care of yourself and reward yourself...Keep posting. We will help you along each step of the way. Tennielle, the patch is my lifeline right now. I couldn't be without it. Not only is it a physical thing for me(i.e.-the nicotine) but its mental. At least with the patch I feel like I'm not floundering on my own. And soooo glad I found the SSC, because I KNOW I'm not floundering on my own. There is so much support and advice here and people who really CARE. You can do this, one day at a time. Hi Tennielle: My words will seem lame compared to the advice of others but if I may just share a thought from my own experience... I was having trouble in the beginning as well. I quit cold turkey. I wanted to/didn`t want to quit...not really...but yes...but..well...Ok...I SHOULD quit but...maybe I'll quit tomorrow - you know the internal dialogue. Anyway, one day I woke up and actually morned the loss of my sickarettes. I had a funeral. I said,,bye-bye to the party days. I told myself I will miss the self sabotage and I thanked them for teaching me that I could DIE from the precious chemicals. I praised them for the times that I would often light up simply because I had a feeble excuse like: I`m bored, stressed, nervous. My most bestest excuse to smoke was well, when I saw someone smoke...well, HEY! I SMOKED TO!!! ISN`T THAT SPECIAL??? Yep. I am 70 something days now quit I can`t remember, I haven`t looked back. I am enjoying the REAL party now. I self sabotage only when I go shopping with all the $$$$$ I have saved from not smoking. Yes. I particularly enjoyed the REWARD system of being a non-smoker. I really should have quit sooner for the presents I buy myself. SERIOUSLY... Anway, seriously, this IS serious and we are all PROUD of you. Contemplation leads to doing and you WILL be SUCCESSFUL. Did you see my favorite quote the other day: Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't...you're right. So.... Think you CAN and YOU WILL!!! We are with you!!! Thanks for sharing.. Love and light. Theresita.. Great advice from people who know about patches, there, Tenni. I've read loads of good stuff about quitting with patches too. Saying that it doubles your chances of quitting - you've probably read this stuff too. I used hypnotherapy, so I was too skint to buy the patches!! (I'm not too clued up on patches, I'm afraid) You're certainly not cheating if you use the patches. I think it's very sensible. Use them correctly and you can have a strong, successful quit, as you know from your past experience - don't forget!! Hope your feeling ok! Tennielle, These feelings of 'Insecurity, Fear, Lonliness, Anger, Anxiety' that you speak of, come from nicotine withdrawal, right? If you don't have a cigarette, this is what happens. You only have to go through these feelings for a short period of time to be free forever. You are in good company - take my hand...
