Without Medication?

I think I'm one of the only guys in this place. How comforting. : ) Anyway, I completely understand your panic attacks and not wanting to take medication. I am 24 and I have had panic attacks off and on since high school. I always told myself I wouldn't take anything. I even considered it a sign of weakness if I couldn't deal with the problem myself. But the panic got to the point where I was getting so frustrated, so I started taking very low doses of Xanex. It does help, but what I've come to find out is, it's not necessarily the drug that helps. It's the idea of having the drug IF I need the drug. Seriously. The other day I was having a panic attack and I didn't want to take the Xanex, so I sat there with the pill in my hand for a minute and it calmed me, then I put the Xanex up to my mouth and it calmed me some more, then I took the Xanex and I felt a lot better. But I FELT BETTER BEFORE the Xanex had even entered my bloodstream. So, yes, Xanex, Zoloft, etc. does help, but sometimes it's mind over medicine. I've tried reading books, listening to music, etc. But people don't understand that when a panic attack occurs, the words, "It's not going to hurt you, just breath" doesn't help. I'm a really strong Christian and I know God is right by my side. That's the greatest help in the world.

Hello Anne Marie, I know I signed up for the diary and used that for awhile, but as it didnt allow me to write notes with the program, I stopped using it. It is a great tool to measure and keep track of attacks, but I needed something to jot down all symptoms everyday especially when the doc was RX'ing all these different meds. I will look into the Panic program today and see what that is all about! Thanks! Beth

Hi Beth. Have you signed up for our free Panic Program? Some people can deal with panic without meds, but others cannot. It all depends on the individual.

Hi Donna, Thanks for writing. It is a big help to know that I am not the only one out here that cannot tollerate the meds- they tried all the SSRI's and I had such increased anxiety so I stopped them, just like you. As I said, they gave me Xanax in the beginning to stop them, and the doc wasnt up on benzo dependancy so now I have to start tapering off of it ASAP. Considering everyone and their Mother out here on the internet is trying to make a fast buck off of our discomforts, is there any one (or three!) programs that you may recommend? Relaxation? A particular book? (I have read "DONT PANIC" about 5 times) Meditiation? Massages? Flute music? Moving to a caribbean island ? (lol) :p Thanks again and keep up the good work- you are obviuosly ahead of the game with your keen awareness!! Warm regards, Beth

Hi Beth, Not too sure about beating it, but I have learnt to deal with it without medication. I have suffered from panic attacks/anxiety for around the last 18mths. In this time I'm sure I've had all the symptoms known to panic.....I have also tried Zoloft and Aropax, both gave me side effects which felt like a panic attack so I chose not to take them. I cope by telling myself that all these terrible symptoms that I'm having is just your imagination working overtime. Be assured though I have also had every test known to man, ranging from brain scans to blood tests, to prove to myself that I am not dying from cancer or a brain tumor or a heart attack..etc Now everytime I feel my heart pounding in my throat, I just ignore it...I don't think.."**** I'm having a heart attack" or everytime I get a headache I don't think "**** I've got a brain tumor". It's all about being positive (apparently) Anyway, I hope you can learn to cope without the medication, sometimes I think it does more harm then good. Take Care Donna
