Thanks for the first reply. I have only had two bouts of depression. One was 6 years ago and I was on Accutane and birth control, Ireturned to normal (whatever that is). I always had a little bit of anxiety but then about 9 months ago my parents told me that they were splitting b/c my dad was ahving an affair. Also, I started birth control again. THat's when panic attacks attacked me like no other...plus I was filling out law school applications. I didn't get depressed until a couple of months into the panic attacks and I pulled through shortly after. I was just so tired of dealing with it. Plus, the depression seemed to lift when I got off birth control. So, part of me says that I have had alot going on in the past year and that's why I am so emotional, but then hearing that pdoc say the bipolar type two thing totally threw me over the edge. Even when I was depressed I didn't stay in bed and all that...I got my ass up and have been working my butt off ever since. WHen the pdoc made that "possible" diagnosis it made me question everytrhing about myself. For instance, I get teary eyed when I talk about things that bother me. like my parents, and I just tend to be sensitive. Well, now I am constantly like "Wait, is that a mood swing?" You know? I am always interested in stuff and I have had a hard time getting up in the morning since I was a kid...pretty normal I think...I am only 22. I guess I just want someone to tell me that just because I have anxiety and am sensitive at this time in my life, that doesn't mean that I am labeled with an illness as serious as bipolar disorder. You know? SO, it is possible for people with anxiety to go through depression occasionally?

GET A SECOND OPINION!!!! I have panic disorder and have also had many bouts of depression. Many people experience both, yet that is not at all the same as bipolar disorder, which happens to be a very popular catch-all diagnosis at the moment. Here is an answer from a medical doctor (at Columbia University) who specializes in treating anxiety and depression, as well as bipolar disorder. Here's what he has to say: WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES IN IDENTIFYING ANXIETY DISORDERS AS OPPOSED TO DEPRESSION? Michael R. Liebowitz, M. D. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish between pervasive anxiety and depression, because people who are depressed may also be anxious and agitated and may even have anxiety attacks. Moreover, people with anxiety disorders may become demoralized and depressed as their illness interferes with their ability to live a normal and happy life. There are, however, some major differences. People with anxiety disorders generally do not suffer the same degrees of lethargy, as do those with depression. Anxious people are more apt to have trouble falling asleep, rather than waking up early, which is a hallmark of depression. Anxiety does not impair a person's ability to enjoy things or to be cheered up, as depression often does. Michael R. Liebowitz, M. D. Ok guys, I just need some advice. I went to a new pdoc and he said I might have bipolar type two. BUT, I looked at the symptoms and never have any of these so-called highs. He says my anxiety could be the "high". Also, I have had two depressive episodes in my life but I was going through some really tough stuff during both of them and recovered. Isn't it okay to go through a grieving process during difficult times anymore? He tried to put me on LIthium and I said no so he is switching me from Paxil to Prozac. The only symptoms that I have are anxiety. I talked to all of my friends and family and asked them their opinion. They all adamantly say that they know I am not bipolar. So, my question is...isn't it possible to have panic disorder and occasionally get depressed? Any advice would mean sooo muchj to me...my doc really freaked me out, I have never felt extreme self esteem, made shopping sprees, etc Seriously.
