I don't necessarily notice irregular heart beats, but my heart rate jumps from around 83 resting to 137 just standing up, along with low blood pressure, both of which cause me to be light-headed. In answer to your question, my mother had this problem when she went through menopause. My father had an irregular heart beat after heart surgery. All 3 of us are on a beta blocker. I am on Toprol XL and they are on Atenolol. I was concerned about being on it long term. My doctor said that God only gives you so many beats and why use them early. The beta blockers are harmless, lower blood pressure slightly (not a good thing for me, but working so far) and they are cheap - why not ask about one. Toprol also helps with anxiety a bit, so that was a side benefit for me. Any anti-depressant you take can cause irregular heartbeats too. I work in a hospital and wish I had a dollar for every person who comes in with an irregular heartbeat - I could quit working! Take heart, it is normal, but get the beta blocker if you can - they really are lifesavers!
I have been getting an irregular heartbeat for many years now, which feels like skipped beats or flutters in the heart. I saw my GP who said they were nothing to worry about but I insisted on seeing a cardiologist, after several tests including a 24hour monitor he told me that they were extrasystoles (extra beats) and that they were nothing to worry about, he suggested that I cut out caffine and reduce my stress levels. I cut out all caffine but reducing my stress levels at the time was difficult as I had five small children. However my children have now all grown up and my stress levels have lowered but I still get these weired heatbeats around the time of menstruation I think this is because my stress levels become higher around this time of the month,( maybe its a hormone thing I`m 42 years old). I sometimes get them when I feel relaxed, sitting watching televishion. I know one thing when I get them it realy freaks me out and I go into panic mode and find it very hard to relax after.
My question is:
Do anyone else on this site suffer with these irregular heartbeats?
How do you cope with them?
Is there any relaxation technics that help to releive them?
Do you know what causes them?
Your replies will be very much appriciated as I am becoming to fear them every month. thanks, Rose.
