I do breathing tec everyday 4 times a day just to try and get it under control. Its working but if I try to doing it when I ahve a panic attack it stress out and have a worse attack.
I have a hard time breathing daily. I often feel as though someone is pressing down on my chest or that I am breathing through pea soup really thick pea soup. Sometimes I loose my breath just sitting down watching TV. I do some deep breathing ... eight counts in eight counts out ... and while I do this I repeat in my head "relax, relax". My therapist says that if I do this every night anxious or not when I am experiencing panic or anxiety symptoms it will work even better. I have found that this is true. When it gets super bad I take an Ativan and that helps also just diverting the thought.
Your not alone!!!
WHen you hyperventilate it does make it harder to breathe, also
overbreathing makes your lungs and diaphram tired and sometimes
even a little sore. This can result in feelings of pressure and pain.
Some people dont just overbreathe, but actually swallow air which can
add to the pressure feeling. Burping can help for some people.
Generally though it is a psychosomatic problem - you feel like you cant
breathe, misintepret the feelings of hyperventilation as being
something else (and usually worse) and panic as a result.
My dr told me that the worst that can happen with severe
hyperventilation is that you faint for a brief period, your breathing
returns to normal, and then you wake up.
Learning to breathe correctly, and minimising anxiety is the key. But
yes, overbreathing all the time can make your breathing a little more
laboured.
Your so not alone.... I've been obbsessing over the thought that I had a brain tumor also. I have had 2 MRI'S both saying there is nothing wrong but I still find that I think I could still ahve one.. And the breathing ting I get that to. How I get over it is that if I don't breath eoungh then I will pass out my body will start breathing again. I know most people worry about passing out.
The heightened sense of anxiety relates to subtle hyperventilation, sometimes is masks itself as a feeling of "air hunger", where you are breathing but don't feel it is to full capacity, and you get a yawning type effect. Diaphragmatic breathing is the best to learn, it helps to identify that you are not on automatic breathing, and can use this techinque to offset it. Also drinking very cold water, 20 sips slowly helps, your breathing through your nostrils then and not the mouth gasping.
Hi Stephanie,
Honey I feel your pain! I have felt like I just can't get enough oxygen and went as far as to hold a mirror up to my nose and mouth to make sure I was still breathing! You are NOT ALONE AT ALL. Trust us all when we say we understand. Breathing into a bag does work well because too much oxygen has a tendency to make you feel lightheaded which could lead to even more panic. Another great thing is distraction. I know it's nearly impossible when you're at the height of panic, but if you can attempt it a few times you might find that it eventually works.
When I can't breathe I go outside and sit for a minute and try diaphramic (sp) breathing. That helps. IF you have a pet try interacting with your pet, that helps too. I have 3 cats!
The derealization or feeling like you don't have limbs is also very very common and something that I experience almost daily. Sometimes its so bad I scream. It happens alot in my car and once I calm down I'm exhausted, so what I do when that happens is remind myself that its a bad feeling that will go away and cannot hurt me or kill me. It helps to get a full physical once a yr or sometimes twice if you need the comfort,(i know i do) to rule out any possible health issues.
For the last few months I had a fear that I was going to have a siezure, it completely ruled my thoughts until I moved on to thinking I heart problems. So see, knowing that I can move so quickly from one "condition" to another reminds me that it's all in my head. :)
Hope that helped even a little.
Take care and keep us posted~
Hi Stephanie,
I sometimes get the problem with breathing. I find that I tend to hold my breathe alot, or so it seems. The paper bag exercise can help if you are hyperventilating as it settles the gases in your blood.
You are definately not alone on this though.
I wouldn't recommend breathing through a paper back because it would be bad breathing used CO2 (and the bag is not always with you). My advice is if its get really uncomfortable (like you are chocking) have a BDZ (ex. Xanax, Klonopin) just in case. If less severe take deep breath and slowly release (the longer the release the better) and if you get really good do not change your breathing pattern at all. Know that the suffocating sensation is part of the panic attacks and it is completely harmless. If you breath rapidly when you have a panic attack, all you are doing is taking in more oxygen than you need.
