RVDMAN thanks for the explanation'I'll look it up at the library or internet. Now you can't drink coffee or else this is all going to go off balance (really) I can do without liquor, chocolate, but not coffee love it , besides research says it's good for you. I have trouble with the kg you see I'm old school and I stick to the pounds and also the pounds are sticking to me right now LOL. I've gained 8 pounds I guess around 3.6 kilos, I feel uncomfortable with it, so I'm going to work on it as of now. I've been eating junk I don't usually eat ice cream, chips ,cup cakes, I'm cutting that out of my diet as of now and I like things done asap so I'm working on it, I'm going to check that GI regiment and get back to you for advise? Now that the quit smoking challenge is less challenging I'm focusing on this losing weight thing with more gusto and determination.
I've been studying base metabolic rate (BMR) and body mass index and caloric usage and all that cool stuff on the net. (You guys probably know more than me so forgive me if this is boring.)
Your BMR is how many calories you use in a day just by existing and breathing. Then you multiply it by different numbers depending on your activity level. (All this is on the net.) This is how you work out your calorie usage per day to maintain your curent weight (maintenance calories).
2 pounds of stored body fat equals 7700 calories. So you have to have a 7700 calorie deficit each week to lose 2 pounds per week.
Multiply your maintenance calories by 7 to get your week's tally. Subtract 7700 calories in order to get your weekly calorie tally for losing 2 pounds per week. Divide by 7 and you have your daily calorie intake that will enable you to lose 2 pounds per week. It's all very scientific and mathematical but you only have to do it once.
OF course talk to your doctor. A nice way to do it is to keep a food journal. If you are under your calories for a couple of days then that allows you to splurge on an indulgence or two. Yay!
Plus do all the great things we did for quitting smoking like studying what motivates you to lose weight. Looks? Health? Energy levels? Clothes? Do you have negative (eg: don't want to have a heart attack) or positive (want to look sexy cool on the beach) motivators? Both are OK.
This has worked for me so far - I've lost 5 pounds and I find it is a huge motivator for exercising. The more I exercise the more I can eat! As I say: YAY!

Great that you are doing research and that it is paying off. Work what works, is my motto. And go for the gusto. I am particularly fond of the GI life. I hesitate to call it a diet and it is a whole different system of eating. My Doctor, Naturopath both recommended it and it has done wonders. I am glad that I can speak with my Doctor with ease about something as simple as diet. I don't follow a schedule with where I want to be and when and I am much much more watchful, vigilant of what I eat and how much physical activity I get. This time around I have lost weight rather than putting it on.

GI Diet. No not a soldier and yes very close.
Glycemic Index and the main proponent, that I follow, is a Canadian Rick Gallop, past President of the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation.
I don't follow all the stuff to the letter and the red, yellow, green food classifications are easy to follow and make a lot of sense.
Too bad no booze, chocolate or coffee and like I said I don't follow all of it. I have lost 2 inches on my waist and about 30 pounds since I started the implementation of this quit in January. And I started following this way of eating after I gained all of the weight in my last quit attempt.
So no I have little room for any discipline right now other than NO SMOKING. Not really true cause I swim five days a week and that takes a lot of discipline, time management and just plain organization.
This is a really good thread cause it is for me about taking a challenge and being responsible to ourself for finding what works for each of us to drop the pounds or in my case kilograms that I have put on in past quits and in living the life I chose.

5lbs! WOW, this is great! Thanks for letting us know what works for you :) It is true that we need to concentrate on one thing at a time, and your quit is well under way.
It is important to talk to your doctor, as they can help you also come up with a plan that is right for you :)
