My reactions were normal (perhaps not typical) physical withdrawal symptoms:
Diagnostic Criteria (Nicotine Dependence)
1. Nicotine abuse: A destructive pattern of nicotine use, leading to significant social, occupational, or medical impairment.
2. Must have three (or more) of the following, occurring when the nicotine use was at its worst:
1. Nicotine tolerance: Either need for markedly increased amounts of nicotine to achieve intoxication, or markedly diminished effect with continued use of the same amount of nicotine.
2. Nicotine withdrawal symptoms: Either (a) or (b). (a) Two (or more) of the following, developing within several hours to a few days of reduction in heavy or prolonged nicotine use:
* sweating or rapid pulse
* increased hand tremor
* insomnia
* nausea or vomiting
* physical agitation
* anxiety
* transient visual, tactile, or auditory hallucinations or illusions
* grand mal seizures
(b) Nicotine is taken to relieve or avoid withdrawal symptoms

There are other sites as well. Just don't have the time to go back and find them all.
I just had really bad withdrawals reactions, probably because I went cold turkey after 29 years of smoking and a year of smoking two packs a day. I was vomiting the second day and having heart palpitations the second and third days.
First, it is alleged that the withdrawal of nicotine does not produce withdrawal symptoms; hence there is no physical dependence on nicotine. A 1966 study by the American Institutes of Research, made under a grant from the United States Public Health Service, demolishes this allegation. Among smokers deprived of their drug, the study indicates, 59 percent of males and 61 percent of females report drowsiness; 41 percent of males and 47 percent of females report headaches; 27 percent of males and 38 percent of females report digestive disturbances; and so on. in general, females report more symptoms than males. The table below supplies details.

It's been a week, and I'm still dealing with heart palpitations at night. I do not want to smoke, but the state of my body does scare me. I've had bouts of diarrhea, vomiting, insomnia, racing pulse and heart palpitations. I thought we detox within 72 hours, so why am I still sick?
Yes. Yes. I went from two packs a day to zero. That might be why the withdrawal is hitting me hard. But I'm going to keep moving forward. I really hated smoking, but had a difficult time quitting.
Hang in there as the saying goes with time this too shall pass.
You are on your way to a great new journey in life and it's so worth it and so are you.

Are you using patches, or other form of NRT? If so, the NRT/patches could be too strong for you. I had the same problem when I used patches (some 10 years ago). The palpitations gradually ceased and, when I dropped down in strength the palpitations stopped altogether.
If it is the patches that causes your palpitations,you should check with your doctor who may advise you to reduce the strength.
Unfortunately, my quit at that time lasted only 7 weeks, because I wasn't fully prepared for all the ups and downs of a quit. This time I've been lucky enough to have found this informative and supportive site - now done 5 Months (Quit date: 14.02.06)
Good luck to you. Come back often and let us know how you're doing.
