hi sean i hope you are feeling a little better today, the site is great and it makes you feel you are not alone. i have 2 young children as well, this actually helps me because it takes my mind of the anxiety and i focus on being a good mum, i struggle on every day with this illness for the sake of my children, if i did not have them im not sure i would of made it over the last 6 years. i have found a fantastic book to read, its self help for your nerves by dr claire weeks, i swear by it, its like my bible, try and get yourself a copy you wont put it down once you start to read it. take care and may tommorow be good. toni

toni, thanks, exhausted nerves and too much adrenaline. that sounds good to me. I am going to think that every time (if ever) I have another one. with a 3 year old and a 10 month old, the thought of leaving them alone perpetuates the attack. I think I can beat this thing though, I just need to believe that it is a panic attack, and that's it, nothing else. And so far, with all of your responses, I am very close to that assumption. Thank you.

Thank you all for responding. I am not exactly sure how this this reply message works, but I clicked on the administrator's post and am replying. If it only replies to you, than thank you for having this site. I bought a breathing video from breathing.com about two weeks ago and it seemed to work but in a big panic attack the when it is fully on, there is not much I can do but ride it out. Today, however, I kept myself busy most of the day, tried to eat right, no caffeine, low fat and low sodium, and went into my Spa to relax my back which I suspect could be the problem. Than, when I went on the computer, I felt my pulse running a little. I laid down and did this neck strenghtening exercise I read about which worked great last night, but the attack was still coming. Instead of just taking it, I decided to take action and went out and cut my lawn, nice and slowly, and edged too. I fought it off. As I write this, I don't feel 100 percent but I feel much better knowing that there are other people with the same thing and other people I can talk to about it. this site is invaluable so far. The funny thing is, 2 months ago, I would have never thought any of this was possible, and thought people with panic attack disorder were nuts. But since I always thought I would live to 100, and nothing could affect me, and now something is, well, I am glad you guys and girls are here to guide me through this. Thank You.

dear sean, i can assure you, you are not going mad you are just going through a very emotional time at the moment. The panic attacks are caused by exhaused nerves and to much adrenalin thats all, it causes all those horrible sensations, racing heart, palpatations, feeling faint etc. i am also 34 and also used to smoke pot drink and go clubbing all the time, i gave it all up a long time ago but for the last 6 years have been suffering with anxiety and panic attacks, i think i have more of a social phobia. there is a light at the end of the tunnel, you have made the first step by logging on to this site, its great and will help you lots. go see your gp and he/she may suggests taking some sort of medication, i am on sertraline, dont be afraid if your gp does suggest medication, i have felt better since taking mine. this is a really ****py illness, friends and family find it hard to understand and be sympathetic but dont worry you have us to talk to. good luck in your recovery. take care toni

Hi, Sean. Welcome to the site and to the group. Caffeine is in cola and many similar beverages. It is a stimulant and if you're prone to panic attacks, it might be a good idea to monitor this and perhaps cut down on it. Many people here found that it made it worse. I would encourage you to sign up for our free online Panic Program that is designed to help you improve your situation. It sounds like you have undertaken some life improvement changes. Congratulations! When quitting smoking, one's emotions can't hide behind the kind of mask that smoking provided. For instance, when upset we smoked, when sad we smoked, etc. Without cigarettes to act as a comforter, emotions tend to feel raw and easy to rise to the top until coping mechanisms are learned and applied. Panic attacks can thus be a part of quitting in the beginning. If you're a new quitter, then be kind to yourself. Treat yourself to relaxing sessions of hot baths or showers, and do reward yourself. The Panic program teaches you to breathe more slowly too. Do you practice any relaxation techniques?

Sean, i think that during panic attacks the blood pressure DOES go up as the heart has to provide the vital organs with proper amounts of blood. but obviously i am NOT a doctor! still, from my experience with panic i have noticed that when i get them, my hands go numb (just hands, not arms) and feet can do the same ocassionally. and i defeintely have hight blood pressure - i think it's a normal reaction. but talk to your doc about everything that disturbing you, don't hide from him/her and fight with the symptoms you don't know are true or false. get diagnosed! and don't worry, i am crazy about my blood pressure too. Hope this helps a tiny bit. Iwona.

Every thing i read on panic attacks talks about accelerated heart rate or a racing heart beat. Does this include high blood pressure? I have many issues relating to my panic attacks, but today, after not having one for two weeks, i felt my arms getting numb and than began to hyperventiltate and thought this was it, i am having a heart attack.. I check my blood pressure and it was 160/79. Does panic attacks cause this, or is it possible high blood pressure causes panic attacks. I have not been diagnosed with high blood pressure as of yet by a doctor, but did have a treadmill ekg and chest x ray and cholesterol test and everthing was fine on that. During my panic attacks my neck seems to hurt and my shoulders too. I think some times I have a pinched nerve. Can a pinched nerve cause high blood pressure or numbness which in turn causes panic attacks. Or could I be diebetic. I am so messed up, but I don't seem to have social panic disorder, but situational. For example, if I had a panic attack shortly after having a caffeine filled coke, i would not drink coke for a couple of days. I changed my diet to more fruits and vegetables and way less fast food. but today i had a cheeseburger, fries and a coke and I seemed to have an attack. So I won't do that for a while. I guess I am just messed up or maybe I have high blood pressure and that is my problem. I am only 34, 6" 1" 184, smoked cigs for 12 years, smoked pot for a while too, and drank a lot beer sometimes, but not all the time. Is this whole thing in my mind? Please help with any advice or anecdotes. Thanks, SEAN
