How Long is this Madness going to Last???

for 18 år siden 0 21 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
This is day 8 and I really need to find something to do with my hands!! I smoked for 20 years because I enjoyed it. Health reasons made me quit. I feel like Homer Simpson drooling over a beer except in my case it is mmmmmmmmmm smoke! I knit (hate knitting) to keep my hands busy, chew toffees when the craving gets me down. I look at my husbands cigarettes everyday and ask them "who's the boss now?" I read through the letters posted in this support forum and that makes me really depressed. I read a letter about someone who has not had a cigarette in 78 days and she/he is so depressed and is still craving a smoke. What have I let myself in for??? I don't want to be looking at a box of ciggies in 80 days time and still drool over it. Do the cravings really last for that long? I'm using a prescribed pill and prescribed tranquilisers to help me through this but my hands feel empty, my mouth feels as if there is something missing. Hi Bonny congratulations you're done with hell week, the worse is over. Nobody's quit is the same, I can only give you my version, the first week was the hardest, the second better, third I hit a snag but it went away. So on and so forth you have to take it day by day, because it's different every day, I'm now at 8 weeks and I only think about it when I smell smoke or see someone smoking, but I can cope with it, I use my coping mechanisms and it works and on with another day. The straws helped me a lot, and chewing cinnamon gum and eating mints and rewarding myself(very Important) Post often it keeps your fingers busy and you will get great advise from the people on thi panel they are the greatest. You can do this one day at a time :)Marie My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 58 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 877 Amount Saved: $232 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 17 Mins: 5 Seconds: 8

Hello Bonny. First of all - BREATH - take some deep breaths. Breath in and blow them out. I really found that anytime I was feeling overwhelmed by my mind and the nicodemon, breathing was the best medicine. And Shevie is so right when she says not to compare your quit to anyone elses. Its yours and yours alone, you own it - you can make it what you want. I know its hard but you have to think positivly. Telling your husbands cigarettes that your the boss is the right attitude - but maybe you should ask your husband not to leave them around - out of site out of mind. As far as your hands go, try a jigsaw puzzle - I found they occuppied my mind and my hands at the same time. It will get better, I promise. ou dont have to get to 78 days and still pine for a smoke. I'm at 58 and I dont anymore. Keep us posted on how you are doing, we're here and we care! Hi, Bonny. Congratulations on 8 days quit and welcome to the SSC. Hell week's done, hello heck week. :) Don't compare your quit to any others. None of us are the same. So if someone is badly depressed at 78 days, that does not mean you will be, too. I certainly wasn't, so follow my example. ;) First off, make sure you reward yourself often. Rewards are very important to the healing process and to battling the depression that often so naturally goes with a quit. They don't have to cost much, or even anything at all. They just need to make you smile a bit, give you a warm and fuzzy feeling. If you need some hand/mouth distraction try this. Cut a straw to about the length of a cig. Put a couple of small folds on one end (the "fire" end) and bite them to crimp them down. Adjust the folds and crimps until it feels like taking a drag on a cig when you suck on it. It makes a great prosthetic and you can "smoke" anywhere, anytime. I used one for about the first 3 - 4 months and it really helped. Keep up the good quit, Bonny. I feel your pain. Don't have a simple solution, but I do know that it to shall pass. I know when your going through this the last thing you want to hear is about someone that had been removed from it for a long time only to succumb or to hear that they still had cravings. You are free right now and that's the most important thing. Everybody has different advice. Mine is to run or walk or bike or some kind of exercise. It is the greatest time in the world to start doing some exercise as it take your mind off the other. Also it has an additional effect in terms of solidifying your resolve. It's a win win. However that's my opinion. Good luck. The straws (cut the length of a smoke) were a real life saver for me. Additionally, crushed ice in the car was great. Hold the phone in your former smoking hand. If you really miss tobacco, go lick a toilet and you get the same sensation (it's a joke). All of this, and I could go on forever, is simply coping skills. Fill your bag with them and keep them at the ready. I break it down to one smoke at a time not smoked. The difference is I have practiced for 108,000 not smoked. See...practice makes perfect. You can to. Look to and count all your benefits from this major decision you have made in your life. You can do this...I just know it. Bonny, Everyone's quit will be different and yours will be unique. Those members at 70 days may experience a bout of craves, but it is normal and will pass. You have completed your first week and this is commendable. Think of this as a good thing and how much better your health will be. Take the time to make a list of activities or hobbies. Join a club, you have a lot more time now and can concentrate on activities that you like. You may even want to start a journal , this will keep you busy and help alleviate those negative feelings :) Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
