It doesn't sound crazy to us. It sounds like you have a serious fear of drinking/ swallowing which is not that uncommon after a bad experience. The trick is t "unlearn" your fear. You are certainly on the right track. You might try to gradually allow the juice bars to become softer and softer before you "eat"/"drink" them. You could read through The Panic Program to get some other ideas. Please do let your doctor know what is going on for you. In extreme cases, people who can't drink and/or eat have to be hospitalized and get IV nourishment before they can start behavior therapy.

i have a similar problem drinking liquids too except when i gulp, which eliminates eating hot soup cause you cant gulp that down. but cold beverages are good. milk is bad but try drinking some ensure or something because its lactose free. that is what has gotten me by the past few months. if you cannot drink then your best bet is to do anything you have to do. eating solid juice is a good start, maybe try sucking on an ice cube or something. i have the same thing happen when i eat. but i didnt choke, i almost choked. the food was stuck in my throat and i literally couldnt move my muscles to swallow and its been that way ever since. how to eliminate this problem of swallowing, your guess is as good as mine. but we can work together on it and if we find anything that works to reduce the panic and the constant thoughts of fear, we can talk about it. are you taking any medications that help it go away even temporarily? if you know of any let me know.

Hi, Francine. Milkshakes and dairy products promote the production of mucus, so they may not be the best item to focus on when trying to overcome a swallowing difficulty. Juice is good, because as you say, it has vitamins. Frozen items may or may not include milk solids, so some may be easier to take than others. The cold might help your throat though as you swallow. Have you found that the cold makes a difference for the best?

Hello: I have read through some of the posts and realize that I may not be alone on my fear of swallowing either. I posted an "Introduce Myself," post, a week or so ago, and talked about my fear of drinking since I had choked on a Coke, and it went down my windpipe. I have had this fear about the last 14 and a half to 15 years, and these episodes have happened before, but I guess I was able to deal with it. My problem is that I think of the fear of drinking anything all the time, which also makes me depressed...Mike, please read this. I have gotten to where I can eat a little bit, and I have gotten milkshakes, which I fear them as well. My situation is kind of like Mike's, when he goes to swallow food, he panics, well, I am like that except my fear is the liquid. Well, I was in the store, yesterday, and I picked up some Minute Maid Frozen Juice Bars, and Tropicana Orange Juice Bars. I believe that these are beverages that you can "eat" as the juice bars are 90% juice with frozen ice concocted in a push-up bar. I have "eaten" about 5 or 6 of those and a couple of the orange juice bars, as hopefully seeing that these are "liquids", that I need to have. The juice bars come in Cherry, Grape, and Orange, and are filled with Vitamin C. The orange juice bars are frozen orange juice on a stick, and are also very good. Please, I just need some advice. Does eating the juice bars sound like a step in the right direction? I am trying to help myself but I just don't know how, and buying these "juice" products, hopefully are good. I am still scared to drink anything, but the juice packs, frozen and all, I can seem to get down, and they supply a full day's supply of Vitamin C. I guess I sound crazy, but please offer me some advice. Thanks Francine
