still cannot swallow

I'd like to share two practical things with you that may or may not apply to you, but that may be useful for others reading this thread.

The first is that I developed a trick for myself to swallow big pills. (I had trouble swallowing large antibiotics) I don't suggest you try this on big stuff, but try it with a little applesauce or even water to see if it will work for you: Don't fill your mouth, but take about a teaspoonful of water. Hold it in your mouth. Press your tongue against the back of your upper teeth. Swallow. It worked for me. Hope it helps someone out there.
The second item is that if anyone reading this has dentures and doesn't remove them overnight to soak them, an infection can set in that can greatly affect a person's ability to swallow. A chronic infection can develop under the dentures and it could also affect one's voice. So remove them completely, soak them, brush your mouth, tongue, gums, gargle, rinse, and leave those dentures out for a while each and every day.
hey well it sounds like we are in the same boat. does the food get stuck in your throat and you cant control your muscles? does it freeze up and u cant swallow it? ive had this problem for about 5 months now. i guess after a while you get used to swallowing a certain way, in our case, a bad way lol. u gotta take slow deep breaths before u eat.. just stick to pasta and rice, things that are almost impossible to choke on. you have to eat everyday and get your swallowing back into rhythm. ive been trying it and its improving alittle, although i still cant eat a big juicy cheeseburger :(... if food gets caught in your throat just ask yourself 2 questions. can i breathe? YES. is there REALLY anything to freak out and panic about? NO.. and just take some slow deep breaths and relax yourself. your muscles may not respond the way u want them to right away, but this takes time and effort (i learned that from the wise people that reply to my posts and it is helping alittle). also, recently i started taking Xanax and that is also helping a great deal. it calms you down alot and gives u alittle extra confidence when u try to eat ;) gotta talk to ur doc. if u happen to find out any other new things on how to help with this problem lemme know. i can only eat if i am completely relaxed. it seems hard to relax especially when fearing swallowing, the fear can really cause problems. if i can just stop thinking and stressing about it, it would be easier to eat. i really dont know if there is any medication that would help me. i took your advice from the last reply and seen a behavioral therapist. all he did was talk to me and tell me to breathe slowly in and out for 2 mins before i eat. it seems like every doctor i see underestimates my problem. they think a simple breathing method will help me. i really need some medication to slightly alter my thinking. and maybe something to mellow me out. if you can suggest any specific meds please let me know. and as to drinking liquids, only when i gulp because my throat is in a rhythm. i cannot sip anything. the problem is mainly when something is in my mouth and i get ready to swallow it, as opposed to gulping when ur throat constantly pumps it down. i think maybe some meds that will slow my mind down alittle are needed. something that will make me stop thinking and let my throat do its thing. i have a problem with thinking too much and stressing about everything. please let me know of any meds i should ask my doctor about that will actually work for me. ive been through so many doctors and it seems like no one can really HELP, they just TELL me things but i really think i need meds. thank you for responding and anymore info would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, Mike. The program you're talking about is perhaps the Panic Program about which I wrote you last month in the reply to your post? http://www.paniccenter.net/support/viewmessages.cfm?Forum=2&Topic=508 See the link to the program on the left of the page for the program. Although it's free, you have to sign up for it too. If you feel bad enough and in danger enough to write your will, Mike, then please see a therapist or doctor about this as soon as possible, especially if you are continuing to lose a lot of weight. From the sound of your post, it sounds like you need immediate medical attention. From you last post, you described eating reagular food and chewing it a lot until you are able to swallow. Perhaps you need to go back and try to take it in baby steps as suggested in the reply. Are you able to take pureed foods? If you're able to swallow liquids, that's where you begin. But perhaps you need some other other meds now to help you through this too?

i used to take zoloft for depression when i was about 16, but it didnt really affect me much. one of the doctors i seen about my swallowing problem gave me risperdal. he must have had my problem mistaken for schizophrenia. its just everytime i eat, my throat muscles are all out of sync. the best way i can explain it is this. i almost choked one time and ever since, ive been afraid of choking, and i suppose as an act of protecting myself from choking (subconsciously probably) everytime i go to swallow my mind does everything it can to fight it, therefore my throat freezes and i cannot push the food down. it remains in my throat as i panic. but yes i think to myself (everything is ok, i can breathe, just relax and swallow it down) but it is really very difficult. will it go away eventually? or are things like this permanent? my life is going well and the only thing keeping me sad is this problem. i cannot enjoy food at all. i mostly drink slim fast and other things for nutrition. but i really have to get over this and eat. id really like to enroll in whatever program was mentioned. but im fairly new to the site and dont know how/what to do if anyone can tell me id appreciate it.

Hi Mike I'm so sorry to hear about your problem. Sometimes when I start to have a panic attack I can't swallow either I get scared like something is gonna happen to me in other words like I'm dying. I try and calm down and tell myself that nothing is gonna happen to me it's just a symptom that goes with my attacks and that we have to swallow it is a part of everyday life. It seems to help me self-talk really works I think. Have you ever tried doing that? I'm enrolled in the panic program here on the site and it really seems to be helping me out alot, I have had panic attacks since I was 15, they went away for about 5 years now at 24 they have returned. I was scared to drive due to having a really bad attack while driving to work, I did not drive again for like 4 weeks. I also take zoloft and xanax if I need it but I usually don't need the xanax. Are you on any meds? You should ask your doctor about zoloft it works wonders atleast I think so and so do most of my friends that are on it. Well hang in there you are not alone trust me, and enroll in the program I think it will help you, if you need to talk more please do so. Let me know how you are doing and how much progress you are making ok. shannal
