I've heard that its not advisable to wear a nicotine patch to bed. It can give you bad dreams.

My official quit date is Friday (thursday night) but I'm cut way down to just a few cigs a day in preparation. I find its very hard to sleep without that last cig before bed. Any advice on how to get to sleep..and stay asleep? I've got some herbal sleeping pills (Melatonin) that work pretty well, but I'm scared I might get addicted to them if I take them every night for an extended period.

Thanks for all the advice! I'm definately planning on removing the patch a few hours before bed to avoid the wicked dreams. I've also got a great relaxation/hypnosis CD that instructs you to do deep breathing exercises and visualize CLEAN air in your lung...cleansing and healing your body. I really like the CD.

Hi Shark, I know how you feel about the bedtime butt. I used to do the same thing, I was like you and cut way down before my quit (it works really well to taper off to say the least!). I've realized that those times craving a butt before bed I have identified in myself as anxiety attacks. What worked for me--Qi Gong a/k/a Breathwork. You just do some deep breathing and it REALLY REALLY RELAXES YOU. By the time you are done you are ready for sleepyland and you are craving your pillow not a smoke. It takes anywhere from 5-10 minutes to complete the breathwork, but I did mine for about 20-30 just because it felt so good to do this!!! You will discover some amazing techniques that will work great and others that will not work so great but it is mainly a journey of self-discovery to find what works best for you. All quits are unique, there are no 2 identical. That said, experiment with something that you are drawn to try and see what happens. Have fun with it, you're on your way to a fantastic quit! Hey Shark, glad to hear you are doing well, it sure sounds like you have found a few things that might be actually starting to work? :) I also have a tape of a meditation quite similar to what you described just with a clean white mist (not to be mistaken for the infamous brain fog) and it is soooo wonderful. The first few times I did it I HAD to lay down from sitting on the floor, but was so 'planted' I just grabbed a few pillows and fell asleep on the floor. LOL. I set a 'stop for the night' time when I began my prep for quitting. Mine was 7pm as bedtime was at 10pm. The patch can give you vivid dreams when sleeping. You may want to take it off for a more restful sleep and slap it on first thing in the morning. Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.

Shark, When you first quit or cut down, you may find it difficult to sleep as long as you used to. Two things can cause this are: As a smoker your sleep may have been interrupted by constant coughing and/or difficulty breathing. When you stop smoking, your body gets healthier and the sleep you get is more restful. So if you wake up suddenly at 5:00 a.m., you may think you are a victim of insomnia. You're probably not! Your body has probably had all the sleep it needs. Smoking drains your body's energy. When you quit smoking you regain this energy. You may need fewer hours of sleep. How long will this last? The first few weeks after quitting. Tips to help: Try making sure you have a regular sleeping schedule. If you wake up in the middle of the night do some light stretches, or read a book to help you get to sleep. If you have a symptom that persists or seems worse than you expected, you should immediately consult a doctor. It�s possible that your smoking has been masking symptoms of some illness, and when you stop smoking the symptoms abruptly become noticeable.
