Recently found this article on American Cancer Society, quide to quitting smoking under patches, Should I use the patch for 3 months if I feel I need it?? Depending on body size, most tobacco users should start using a full-strength patch (15-22 mg of nicotine) daily for 4 weeks, and then use a weaker patch (5-14 mg of nicotine) for another 4 weeks. The patch should be applied in the morning to a clean, dry area of the skin without much hair. It should be placed below the neck and above the waist - for example, on the arm. The FDA recommends using the patch for a total of 3 to 5 months. However, some studies have shown that using it for 8 weeks or less is just as effective as using it for longer. Thank you for the tips. Prefer to stay on the patch longer than 10 weeks. I have to retrain myself for smoking 38 yrs. I read two places now that 3-5 month is OK. Margie, I am using the patch longer then the recommended 10 weeks. I have read that it is safe to use the patch longer and have also read that sometimes it may be better if you do. They say not to cut the patches, but I am with no problems and have known other people who have cut them also. Once I finished with the 2 weeks of 7mgs, I cut the 21mg 4 ways and wore 5.25mg for 2 weeks and now I am on my last day of wearing 3.50mg. For the next 2 weeks I am going to wear 1.75mg and then go off of them. I know I could go off now and be okay, but I just feel better weaning myself down as far as I can before going it without any nicotine. You could discuss all this with your doctor or maybe a pharmasist and see if it would be okay for you to stay on them longer.
