Hello, I just joined this site, but as you can see I've quit for a little while now. I really quit on November 20th during a trip out of the country. I then smoked about 2 packs of cigarettes between x-mas and new year's eve. New Year's eve I smoked a huge, fat cigar and almost got sick (did this intentionally, hehe) and haven't smoked since. My problem is this.... "relaxing" after it's been a little while since I've smoked. I get into the frame of mind where I don't think about smoking very often (once every other day or so). But these consistent cravings aren't very strong and easy to brush aside. However, once in a while the cravings become so severe that I'll think about them constantly. This is when it becomes difficult for me because I've let my guard down but the unsuspected cravings are very strong and hard to resist. Indeed, as I've said, with quits in the past it was at these times that I'd start back up. Maybe this is why I joined the site now instead of when I was just quitting.. hehe. I guess I'm just babbling and don't have much of a question after all. Thanks for letting me vent and tell about my insignificant story. itisme, Congratulations on your decision to quit and welcome to the SSC. As the others have said, your story is very significant. Quitting is about reclaiming your life.. how significant is that?? Once a person is comfortable in their quit, that is the most dangerous time in the early goings. You feel confident, self assured and then... wham!! A knee buckling crave hits you and all you can think of is "where is the nearest store so I can get a pack!!" That is what the nicodemon wants you to say. He is counting on your complacency to get you back into his fold. But now is the time you must hold on the tightest to your quit. It is now that you deal with him one on one and defeat him. The more small victories you have over your craves, the fewer of them there are. In due time you will simply just ignore them and they will pass like water under a bridge. As a former nicotine addict, you will probably have a thought now and then about cigarettes for the rest of your life.. it's only natural. And that is fine. Just let those thoughts pass.. in fact, they were your past. They are history. Just like your smoking. You are on the right track. Stay focused. Stay aware. A healthy snack when you crave can help, as can mild exercise such as a quick walk, if practical. Reading and concentrating on something else is also very good. Hi, itisme. Congratulations on your quit and welcome to the SSC. Vent all you want, that's why we're here. Your story is [u]not[/u] insignificant. One thing that really helped me during my first few months was to look ahead a minute or two, watching for times I would have lit up. When I saw a time approaching (leaving a store, for example) I would expect a crave to hit and I'd be ready for it. What I found was that expected craves tended to be very weak, if they happened at all. You cannot let your guard down. The price of freedom (from smoking) is eternal vigilance. Hi itisme, When those times hit you, where you can't think of anything besides smoking, that's when it is most important to distract yourself. Get your coping skills ready with the quit program tools on this site. Have hard candy or gum handy. Use everything at your disposal to distract your mind from smoking. Tell yourself N.O.P.E. (Not One Puff Ever), pop in a piece of hard candy and move along with what you need to do. No one has ever died from a bad crave, but smoking will kill you slowly.
