Identify situations that put you at high-risk for a slip

I have not always coped successfully, as we all know, but one thing that's really helped me is promising not to smoke before I get 5 responses here. When I have needed help, I've posted for help & taken a bath. After the bath, I have always had more than 5 responses to lift me up, the craving is past, and I feel strong, supported & successful. The promise part is really important because it's still a promise even if I'm not in a position to post right when I have the craving. I made a promise, so I have to wait till I can post. I encourage all newbies to make that promise. It has saved many quits. WOW!! I just reread my Allen Carr book this am about "Why we slip"!!! Stress & being around other smokers are the biggest!! Stress, is always here, whether we smoke or not. I do not want to be a stressed out smoker!! Other smokers....... When my husband still smokes!!! I just keep asking myself, "Do I relly want to be smoker" My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/25/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 153 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,060 Amount Saved: $459.00 Life Gained: Days: 16 Hrs: 18 Mins: 45 Seconds: 58

It is my birthday on Sunday and my husband is taking me away for the weekend to a hotel/casino. I have been avoiding doing basically anything for the last two months because I am afraid to go anywhere. For almost 20 years every step I went had a cig with me. And a Casino? I could chain smoke 2 packs in 5 hours without even noticing....so I am freaked out that this special event he has planned for me will turn into disaster. I know I need to get out and start doing things again, but when I sat and talked to him about it last night, I could not come up with one activity that I did that I didn't smoke, except the ones you couldn't, like church or a movie. I am hoping that this will be the first step to prove to myself that you can actually do things and enjoy it without smoking, because I have to tell you, it doesn't feel like that right now. I was a little nervous initially about social outings. I didn't find them to be nearly as problematic as I'd anticipated though, especially as friends stood out in the cold. :p Unexpected stresses have been a problem for me though. Last night, for example, I had my car towed in sub-freezing temperatures, got home 2 hours late, was in for God only knows what in repair expenses, had to find transportation for work this morning, had my daughter asking me about going here & there & everywhere this weekend when I had no transportation myself, etc., etc., etc. :gasp: I'm not sure I've wanted a cigarette (and/or stiff drink) quite so badly since I made it through hell week, but.... I did make it through without breaking down even when a "friend" jokingly offered to bring me a pack. (Way to be supportive, huh?) I feel pretty proud about having fought through the urge. there were a couple events I attended on a weekly basis. Those were some of my most dangerous times. With this quit if I felt uncomfortable I would just not attend. I let the people know and they understood. Sometimes we just have to change playgrounds until we are firm into our quits I am finally to the point where I can talk myself though what a cigarette really means to me. I ask myself do I really want to start all over again, do I really want to lose all the freedoms quitting has given me and this may sound silly but it is key to me I ask myself do you really want to sink? The smell on a smoker is awful to me today. Anyway that is what I do. Members, Its important to identify situations that place you at high risk for slipping and or relapse. Common high-risk situations for many an include: Being emotionally upset Social settings in which temptation is likely Unexpectedly encountering the to-be-avoided object It is equally important to have a plan prepared ahead of time to cope with these situations before we encounter them. Although the easiest way to cope is to avoid these high-risk situations, for some scenarios, it is not possible. For these situations, try writing down the specifics of what happens to you. Ex: When I am stressed, I just want to relieve it by grabbing a cigarette and calming down. Next try finding alternatives to what you habitually do when in this high-risk situation. Example: When I am stressed, I will take a long warm bath instead. Example: When I am stressed, I will take a walk. Example: When I am stressed, I will have a cup of tea and write in my journal. Please join us and share what your high-risk situations are and how you cope with them. Danielle, Bilingual Health Educator
